I don't really get/like metal...

There is nothing wrong with not "liking" or "getting" a band, a musician, a song, a genre, whatever (sorry @mellowinman). It's called opinions, and that's exactly WHY we have choices.

I hate cilantro - that doesn't mean it's not a valid spice, or that others love it.

Are you trying to say Cilantro is not a valid spice?

Them's fightin' words, pal.*

*actually I don't much care for cilantro either

I like a lot of thrash and hardcore, but I cannot find anything redeeming about death metal or progressive metal outside of the drumming. I can't stand the cookie monster vocals or the sporadic sweeping guitar lines. I get that it is technically magnificent, but it all just sounds like random noise to me.

I pity the fool who can't appreciate different types musical expression that don't necessarily fit one person's taste, and have to post in the form of disguised trolling. its time to grow little fella. Let some light shine on the darker side of music for ya! ;) maybe in time you'll find you just don't prefer metal! :roflmao:...

Depends on when you were 14. I was 14 in 1957. It was Elvis, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis...
Metal, like any other genre, is a generational thing. What are current 14 year old males listening to?

My first thought was “probably garbage,” but then again, I listen to a lot of the same stuff that adults my age were calling “garbage” when I was 14. The cycle continues...

This is the essence of it. I was just thinking today that a lot of live music that people are out playing or listening to is pushing 50 years old. When I was 14, 50 years previously would have been 1907. It was like this:
Top 40 Pop Song Chart for 1907.
We didn't listen to that at all. We didn't even know it was out there. Things sure change.
But, I attribute it to a major change in popular music. It was the very beginning of Rock & Roll. I feel cheated because we had no classic rock to listen to. It was all brand new stuff. Our music was so different that what was popular before us, there was no relationship. The instrumentation was changing as electric instruments were being used more and more. It was also economic. The big bands of 22 - 25 members began shrinking because venues couldn't pay the rates any longer. It was an entirely different thing. We invented it.
So, every new genre that comes along, the 14 year olds are the ones leading the charge. The older ones cling to what they liked at 14.
Gus Backus once told me there is good music and there is bad music. The only difference is the quality of the performance.
