I don't understand the "Search child forums as well" box

Can someone describe a use case for this? I suspected that it would be useful if you want to search across several sub forums. Say you wondered if your search term might be found in Technique, Tabulature and Notation, or Bassists.

However, the check box ONLY shows up in my searches when I select a sub forum, like Basses. Which has no child sub forums.

It's not there when I search in General Forums, or Ask a Pro!, say. Which do have child forums.

That is odd. But as a workaround, you can click More... for an advanced search and "Search child forums as well" is selected by default.
