what are the tell tale signs?

if it helps anything, i have a yorkville XS400 hooked up to a PA speaker, and it just doesn't seem to be putting out the volume.

this was rather sudden.

i'm also running through a behringer hellbabe wah, a boss ODB-3, an MXR bass auto-q, a self made cut-off switch, and sometimes into a line 6 toneport running on gearbox.

Try it without all that stuff in the signal chain first. Amps when they go are usually either dead or very distorted. The effects return jack on many amps can cause a drop in volume if the connection inside the jack corrods (if you use it or not), a patch cable from effects send to effects return will bypass the internal connection. If all is okay again with the patch cable then the return jack needs to be cleaned or replaced.
