I feel guilty playing my boutique basses...

One of the guitarists in a band I was in gave me a little attitude about my gear. I owned several guitars and basses at the time. None of them were boutique. (the most expensive was my Ric). One time, when I had recentlt joined the band, I asked him if his Strat was Mexican. He immediately got defensive and said: "Yeah well some of us can only afford one guitar!".

I wasn't being derisive at all. I didn't care that it was Mexican (I owned a couple MIMs at the time) I was hoping to strike up a conversation about the quality of MIM Fenders, mods, pickups, etc.

It didn't make me feel guilty or self-conscious about owning more (or more expensive) gear, though. I considered it his problem, not mine.

I played three sets on my Ibanez Mikro on Friday and Saturday night a few weeks ago...in front of a full house in a club and at an outdoor venue. They loved it, I dug it and I made about 3 times what the Mikro cost me.

I've done similar in the following weeks. That great little cheap-assed bass has paid for itself many times over.

Its not a rude thing to say to anyone, more or less a polite way of shrugging off their comments!

You shouldnt feel guilty about playing a nice piece of hardware!

I've done doubling gigs on a $4000 electric and a $1000 Kay upright and also on a $30000 hawkes upright and a $400 electric. I don't feel guilty at all. I don't have any of the instruments in question anymore but if you can afford the tools that work for you and the job at hand who cares.

Hi folks.

I was working on my car yesterday and fixed a problem that could've cost a few thousand dollars for under $250. The weather was beautiful here in Maryland, I even got to work in the shade on my car. Birds were singing, bunny rabbits were frolicking round, my cat was indoors not killing them and it was just an all around great day.

Then I came on Talkbass and it seemed like thread after thread after thread was hip deep in negativity and judgments. People judging people they don't know based on that lack of knowledge. Universal "this is better than that". "expert" opinions that clearly lacked in expertise. And I mean blatantly. I'm not going to ponder when people got so close-minded, they likely always were, it's just that now they can broadcast it to the world.

This stuff seems to go beyond opinion. And apparently it's really important. If I didn't know any better I'd probably buy into this and feel guilty as I mentioned. I don't of course, I just wonder what propels the need to make others feel that way? Does it make your playing more competitive? Is it sour grapes? Misery loves company? What is it?

No, I don't really expect an answer. I figure with all of the other conversations going on, what's the harm in one more?

Any music gear opinions or related experiences I post are based on my playing about 40 shows a year. An experienced answer can be helpful or sometimes, it doesn't help someone's preconceptions but rather, rankles.
