I feel guilty playing my boutique basses...

Don't tell me you sold an organ or used the kids college money to buy your guitars. In case you did, don't fret over it. Just play the frets. Heck, you should have a spare kidney, eye, lung, etc and college is so 90's stuff and way over rated.

If you didn't do the things mentioned above, ask the mods to ban all threads on why Sire and SX are all you need. JFYI, I hate those threads.

Then I came on Talkbass and it seemed like thread after thread after thread was hip deep in negativity and judgments. People judging people they don't know based on that lack of knowledge. Universal "this is better than that". "expert" opinions that clearly lacked in expertise. And I mean blatantly. I'm not going to ponder when people got so close-minded, they likely always were, it's just that now they can broadcast it to the world.

This stuff seems to go beyond opinion. And apparently it's really important. If I didn't know any better I'd probably buy into this and feel guilty as I mentioned. I don't of course, I just wonder what propels the need to make others feel that way? Does it make your playing more competitive? Is it sour grapes? Misery loves company? What is it?

No, I don't really expect an answer. I figure with all of the other conversations going on, what's the harm in one more?

I mean no offense here... I know you were listening to the birds sing, while watching the bunnies frolic, all while keeping your cat at bay from murderous results, but I have to ask.... Was yesterday your first visit to the Internet? Grain of salt, friend...Grain of salt.

You spent YOUR MONEY on what YOU WANTED.

I've worked and saved hard and now only have high end basses. I never feel guilty about owning or playing them. It's a reward to me for working hard and sticking with music. To me they sound great and give something different if I want. All the bands I have worked with enjoy the sound of the bass and many a time I've overheard a band member telling someone that "our bass player uses Alembic basses". Play what you love and can afford, as others have said "life is too short".

I buy what I like to play, I feel no guilt if I'm playing something nice (my attitude is I worked hard for it, I'm going to enjoy the fruits of my labors). I don't feel much envy from
other bassists (probably because I'm not a guitarist, who are usually ego driven, self proclaimed gods), in fact I've never heard a disparaging word from a true bassist...
I do have a friend whose a guitarist who doubles on bass when need be, who thinks I'm on an ego trip because I play an Alembic and (gulp) yes it does leave the house, (though
there's no problem with him owning a $3500 PRS) but then he plays a passive Fender Pbass.... so that's that. My point here is that, I don't care what anybody else thinks of
me.... I do hope they enjoy the sound of my bass and the music being played, regardless of if I'm playing a MIM Jazz bass, or an Alembic. And lets be honest, the average
audience member doesn't know the difference between the 2. 1 thing I will openly admit is better quality basses have enabled me to become a better player, I can play passages
like Stanley Clarke's School Days solo which I couldn't do on any bass I owned without having to fight the bass (on some basses like an American Deluxe Jazz, the neck is very fast compared to my old G&L with a baseball bat for a neck). sO I SAY PLAY THAT BOUTIQUE BASS AND KEEP SMILING!

You should feel bad. Anyone who enjoys the whether we're having here is a sick, sick man. Heck, the school system closed my son's school Monday because of the heat/humidity (no air conditioning at his school).
