I feel guilty playing my boutique basses...

This year i paid over 3000$ for my 2 Basses, (had 6 cheap basses for 25 years) it's the price of my minivan (2nd car)
At home we have a drum, a piano, a keyboard and 2 guitar and amps that my kids may use to learn music and soon will buy a SJag SS for them to learn bass.
We're not rich, but we love music
... So it's all about choice

Hi folks.
I was working on my car yesterday and fixed a problem that could've cost a few thousand dollars for under $250. The weather was beautiful here in Maryland, I even got to work in the shade on my car. Birds were singing, bunny rabbits were frolicking round, my cat was indoors not killing them and it was just an all around great day.
Then I came on Talkbass and it seemed like thread after thread after thread was hip deep in negativity and judgments. People judging people they don't know based on that lack of knowledge. Universal "this is better than that". "expert" opinions that clearly lacked in expertise. And I mean blatantly. I'm not going to ponder when people got so close-minded, they likely always were, it's just that now they can broadcast it to the world.
This stuff seems to go beyond opinion. And apparently it's really important. If I didn't know any better I'd probably buy into this and feel guilty as I mentioned. I don't of course, I just wonder what propels the need to make others feel that way? Does it make your playing more competitive? Is it sour grapes? Misery loves company? What is it?
No, I don't really expect an answer. I figure with all of the other conversations going on, what's the harm in one more?
Yeah I understand you ... here you have to have a Fenda P bass in sunburst with a tort guard and flat otherwise you are a flake. Whatever.
It is your money, your bass and I'm sure you have more than the ability to appreciate such fine instruments. Something lost on people here.
I don't have boutique basses, but I do have 14! Do I feel guilty? Hell no. I don't have boutique basses because I prefer simple passive p and j basses. There's no reason to be guilty having an expensive instrument (or a few, or as many as you like). Be proud and loud, rock.
Here I was all worried about you. You know, Brad, you have a real bad attitude. Perhaps, you need to move out here to the Southwest where it was 120 F yesterday. In fact, if you did come out here, you could get your attitude adjusted just by checking out the resources in our local CL:

I'm beginning to think I have absolutely no clue what this thread is about...or what it used to be about, before it drifted...or whatever...
I took over my wife's '02 Mini Cooper S (long story). Been having a ball with it for around a month when one Saturday morning on the way home from rehearsal I heard a *pop* and then the car starts misfiring. It had blown a spark plug out (I honestly didn't even know that was a thing). I waited two hours for a tow home less than 10 miles away (another long and seriously goofy story, the driver drove past me three times) and started researching the issue. Turns out it's not as rare as I thought and the most heavily recommended fix was buying a $200+ kit from a company called Time-Sert to replace the threads in the aluminum head with a threaded insert. I tried a couple of other fixes first and they didn't work so I sprang for the Time-Sert and the problem was remedied in less than an hour. Sweet.
The alternative was to take it to a shop. I don't have a shop I trust anymore. This is one of those classic problems where you hear "well, we tried to repair the threads but it didn't work. You're going to need a new head. Big bucks".
So, as I got my car back on the road for what initially seemed like a hefty price for the kit vs. the competition, it ended up seeming like peanuts. Cue the bunnies and birds... it was a nice day. Yay.
Then I came here and read one guy complain about people making recommendations followed by him making a recommendation
. That was funny in it's blind hypocrisy. Then read a stream of people putting other people's gear down, people ranting about things that don't work that do and all sorts of the usual dumbness.The lesson: next time I'm having a great day... no internet.

Probably not... didn't really have a target in mind. More of a bass related vent.
I met a man last week that's only been playing bass for a little over a year, yet currently own 6 $3000+ boutique basses. Only plays bass in his church band a couple times a month.
I was tempted to chastise him, but i know that if I had his dayjob I could afford all those basses too. And it makes him happy.
So I asked him kindly to add my name to his will.

Around here, it seems like everybody has sport cars, RV's, ATV's and snowmobiles. My hobby is pretty cheap in comparison.

I definitely shouldnt have the basses that i have. Not necessarily a talent to instrument quality ratio but more of a utilization to instrument quality thing.
I just realized it tonight.
I proudly display my instrument, every chance I get! All seasons, day or night... it does not matter. I've grown so attached to my instrument, it's like a smaller version of myself, begging to be played without fear of measuring up to the almighty 1% of the industry. I ask you to not stroke my ego, but please respect the instrument, that of which, is mine...
