I feel guilty playing my boutique basses...

I met a man last week that's only been playing bass for a little over a year, yet currently own 6 $3000+ boutique basses. Only plays bass in his church band a couple times a month.

I was tempted to chastise him, but i know that if I had his dayjob I could afford all those basses too. And it makes him happy.
So I asked him kindly to add my name to his will. :D
Collecting is collecting. Some people collect expensive basses.

I have a student who is a few years in but is in a situation where he can afford many nice basses. He enjoys the act of finding a deal or having a variation of a bass that has a slightly different tone than one that that looks exactly the same.

He truly enjoys music but the collection of things related to music is just as important.

More power to him.

Agreed.

Collect, use, set fire to, it shouldn't matter.

This is what I'm talking about, folks. Because of the rules I'm supposed to tolerate people like this who only contribute to the noise. And they get away with it because I'm under threat of a ban if I engage these people. Anyone else tired of it?
:meh:

To be honest, if you don't want noise, why start a thread with this theme in the first place?

Rise above. Easy enough to ignore those that don't like boutiques, or Fenders, or 5 strings, or fancy cabs, or cover bands, or cheap basses, or metal, or TNC.

Those who have boats or cars or any other numerous hobbies spend exponentially more on their toys and tools than most musicians. I bought a Mazda with 108k miles on it for 8 grand and it was no dream car. Spending 8k for a bass can get you nearly anything you want. Doesn't seem that bad in perspective of some hobbies.

Disclaimer - I believe my most expensive axe at the moment is probably $600 but only because I've had to sell off my nicest stuff when things got tight. The cheap stuff has played many gigs and paid for itself time and time again.

This cuts both ways: Anyone who feels superior because of how much or how little their instrument costs is an a**hole. Anyone who feels ashamed of how much or how little their instrument costs is misguided.

It's not about the instrument, folks, it's about the player.

sometimes you get tired of rising above. Why not tell the other guy to rise above?

If you can tell me what this thread has to do with a guy taking a swipe at my business, knowing I can't respond I'm all ears. Because while Talkbass lets him do that, the standard for me doesn't allow it. I don't pop into his posts trolling Greenboy cabs. Nor do I want to. So what's his problem?

There are people who troll simply because they can. Without my hands tied behind my back I have no problem dispatching these trolls.

Don't know; don't particularly care. I honestly think he was just trying to be funny. But this thread wasn't started about that, it was started as a swipe at those who apparently believe that some of us should feel guilty for playing boutique gear.

Noise about noise. You've been here longer than most, but the "boutique guilt" theme didn't just come up this week. I've heard it plenty of times in my 11 years here.

No, that wasn't why it was started. I'm done with this tangent.
