I got a story and a question.

It's not that just good people deserve help, it's that good people deserve help BEFORE the bad people.

Fundamental axiom of business: Reward up statistics, penalize down statistics. Do not reward down statistics or the result will be a down statistic.

This is why you give someone who does not work a free house and he/she trashes it. Reward someone for being a scumbag, you'll continue to get a scumbag. Reward someone who is a little down on their luck, help them get on their feet and they will reward society by becoming a contributing member and also help others in return.

Example: I was a good student and went to college on partial scholarship. My parents didn't give me a dime. I graduated in 4 years and have a good job. My brother did not get any scholarships, my parents decided to help him because he "wasn't as smart and didn't get good grades." Result: flunked out of first college for partying. Took five more years to get bachelors. Got low-paying job. Lived at home. Changed his mind on what he wants to do. At 28 FINALLY moved out and is back in school for a different degree. They rewarded him for being "not as smart" and look what happened. He never worked hard.

Don't reward down statistics.

I think its sad to see people think of other people as statistics.

It seems to me that your motivation is all wrong. You won't feel any better for putting any money in there. You won't feel any better from making him watch you put the money in there. You won't change anything. Two dollars will make zero difference in his life, and will not save him from death.

Conversely, not giving him any money will not make you feel better, either. It will not make you feel like he's getting his deserved revenge, like you're getting one over on him. His lack of your two dollars will not make him die any sooner, or any more miserably.

When you have a clear conscience, your path will be visible to you. It seems to me this is a good lesson in humility and heart. You have some serious soul searching to do.

You need to forget the pain he caused you and think of the pain it will cause everyone around him

If you dont donate this is just going to cause him more pain than those beatings ever could do to you

Ultimately he may have been a complete dick but do you think he is likely to do that to anyone again if he has only one arm and knows what real pain is

I'm very surprised that so many people here feel that only good people deserve help. :scowl:

Lots of people in this world need help. There's gotta be some way to decide, right? You can't help them all. If I've got to choose between helping a starving child or a dying bully, I'll take the child, thanks.

4stringfury- does throwing that little pittance in the jar make you feel better? Do you think it's honestly doing any good? If you want to really garner the approval of the christian set, you'd be better off going to the hospital and offering this guy your forgiveness.
