I got a story and a question.

So back in high school there was this kid in my class, and we hated each other. I dont mean like we didnt like each other, or we kinda annoyed each other. This was nasty brutal hatred. This kid used to gang up on me after school and stuff with about 4 or 5 friends and theyd just beat the crap out of me about once a week. Im a pretty decent fighter, but I was out numbered 5-1 so yeah... not a good chance. This went on for four years mind you.

So wham! Here we are 2 years later and Im going to college just down the road from where I grew up and this all went down. Im up at the local gas station getting fuel and my usual extras, a Butterfingers candybar, an A&W cream soda, and a cheap vanilla cigar. So while Im waiting for the gal behind the counter to ring this up I look down and notice this can with aslit in the top, and its got the face of that kid that used to wail on me on the front of the can. So I start reading the wording on this can.

This kid has come down with some sort of rare parasite. His family is asking for donationations to pay for the operation to fight it, and I happen to have a little money in the bank right now, and Im thinking about donating. I was going to give him some money, but I started to reflect on the great times we used to share. I walk out the door and I dont put so much as a penny in that can.

That was about a month ago. Today I go into that same gas station for my fuel, candybar, and soda. My old friend still got his jar in there, but we got an update. It appears that they didnt raise enough money to get the treatment and this parasite had spread to his left arm. As a result of this spreading they had to amputate the arm, so they are still trying to raise money before he loses more limbs and ultimately dies. Essentially he is being eaten alive insideout.

Now keep in mind this is the same kid that used to mock my family, and say many unkind things about my mother and sister whom I care about a great deal. This is the same kid that would call me and my friends a bunch of fags, and then single us out and beat us up.

My question is should I put my money in that can?

O its legit I dont doubt that. I now work with people that know him and its really happening. I dont think I feel sorry enough for him to help him out though, unless someone here can give me a good reason why I should. I do usually donate to stuff though. I donate to stuff like Make-A-Wish and other childrens charities.

Seriously though, you will help him because it heals you to.

^%$^% I'm not religeous in any way , shape or from, but if you're going to feel like 5h1t if his demise from this thing could have been stopped by a buck or two, you should help a little. If an ounce of forgiveness will salve your own soul, drop a couple of bucks in his tin.

Man I don't want to sound soppy but it's not about him, because he can't help his situation, this is about you.

Thats just exactly my conflict. I am Christian and I try to live by the Bible, but I hate this guy so much that I could honestly watch him die and not really be bothered by it at all.

I'm not saying this to be mean, but that's entirely the wrong attitude for a Christian. I know a guy who watched his grandfather shoot his grandma in the back when she stood in front of him to protect him. You think he likes his grandfather? Not really, but he has to forgive him on a daily basis. Forgive 70 times 7. Who knows how this guy could turn out? He might be the most thankful person in the world if the community saves his life and he might impact others with his story.

Ask where you can give a donation to. Write him a check for $100 dollars or something and let him know that you're rising above. Help him out for the Karma, but make sure he knows that he "owes" you some deep thoughts of thanks in his head for all the crap. Nothing in this world is free, you never get something for nothing and neither will he. Help the guy, it's important to be a good person. But make sure he knows that you are putting the past aside for his sake.

Yeah man I know what you mean, but Im just not a very forgiving kind of person. Thats not an excuse just a fact.

Donate the money to someone who isn't a complete waste of breath. There are plenty of charities available and the logistics of change donations for an operation that has to cost somewhere in the thousands (tens of thousands) just don't work out. What happens to the money when the guy dies or when they come up short?

It's not up to me to advise you what to do, even if you did ask. But what I will do is tell you how I regard charity and giving to those in need and you can make of it what you will.

I set aside a certain amount of money every month that is given to those in need, and most of that is to established local charities for food and necessitites for those who can't live without the assistance. I make these donations without knowing who is receiving the help and whether or not they "deserve" it. I would consider it arrogant to begin to pick and choose who is "worthy" of the donations and I would mistrust my own motives if I thought I could buy "good karma" by manipulating who the money goes to.

Like most citizens, I occassionally get stopped by people soliciting donations for some cause or another, but I NEVER give money under these circumstances. My regular charities get the money and that isn't going to change just because there happens to be a donation jar with a sad story printed on it sitting in front of me.
