I guess I gotta get a wallet??

Alright, I admit it: I'm still working out all the kinks in this Game Of Life. But I hate wallets and haven't carried one for several years.

But now that I'm legitimately out on my own here, I've got cards out the wazoo - Debit, Credit, DL, state Electrical Trainee card, a coupla Grocery store rewards cards (which got me $.030/gal cut from filling up my car today), and today I received the health insurance card through my new job. I rarely carry cash on me, and the pants I normally wear have a cool pocket in a pocket that's perfect for carrying the cards I normally carry.

Additionally, what does one do with a health insurance card?? For most of my adult life I've been in the military and all of our care is directly tied to your SSN, and care is normally mandated through the chain of command - yearly checkups and such. Do you carry it on you 24/7 in case something happens? I've never had these concerns before.

Lastly, is there a wallet that doesn't jab into my butt, or is unobtrusive enough to stash in a cargo pocket?? It won't be carrying much, but it still needs to be of little thought since I carry enough crap on me as it is.

Peace,
Greg

First things first, watch this:

This is not what you want. Instead, get a simple billfold and carry the minimums. If you open my wallet, you'll find my driver's license, health insurance card, credit card, corporate credit card, and my debit card. On the other side you'll find a few of my business cards, my AMA card (American Motorcycle Association since they tow cars AND motorcycles, as opposed to AAA), and if I'm lucky, I'll have a $20 bill in there too.

Don't get a trifold, don't save your receipts in your wallet, and don't carry store cards. That's how to keep it manageable. I barely notice my wallet in my back pocket (or conversely you could carry in a front pocket) -- my buddy does this with a money clip that holds credit cards... I believe he keeps his credit, debit, corporate card, driver's license and health insurance card and that's it.

Any store worth their salt will be able to look up your information every time. Figure out what you can leave in your car that you only need occasionally.

Carry only what you need day to day, and maybe in an emergency. Everything else stays in a drawer at home until you need it.

Big ol' +1

I have trifold, and always find the extra space pretty much superfluous. I think I might have a library card and a Best Buy gift card with $.70 on it in the extra space over a bifold. Personally, I like the small store cards meant to go on a keyring. I keep all my keys/store cards on a lanyard, and they are pretty unobtrusive.

It's a trial-and-error process, IMO. I have carried ones made from synthetic materials and leather. Did trifolds but came back to bifolds. I have a co-worker who does the rubber band thing. Do whatever works for you.

I have discovered one thing about wallets: if you sit a lot at work or in a vehicle, don't sit on your wallet. I suggest you get in the habit of having a consistent stash location to facilitate this.

I'm the kinda guy who carries a shoulder bag at all times (yes yes, manpurse, whatever). I started about ten years ago and I don't know how I ever managed without one. I do not remember walking outside of the house without one in ten years. turns out women had the right idea with this handbag thing.

Dear kanonfodr,

You're a big boy now. You should be able to figure this one out on your own. If you can't, then no amount of advice from this place is going to help you.

Please don't tell me you need assistance wiping your tushie either.

Having even a thin wallet in your back pocket can end up causing spinal issues, even hip issues. Try and carry the minimum and get a simple slim wallet or a billfold. I prefer a money clip but since im broke I usually can never carry enough cash to keep the clip snug enough to hold my cards.

To be honest I want to start carrying a medium to large sized bag (yeah a purse)
