I HATE new strings!

Replacing one string and then looking to age it chemically
Buy some flats or boomers and replace the whole set.

You do sound like someone that might really like Chromes. They have a little “excess zing” at first but once broken in they remain stable for a long, long time. A little passive tone roll off will easily tame the new ones. Nice full midrange attack, none of those pesky piano harmonics, and smooth as butter under the fingers.
i would hate new strings too if i only changed 1 string. thats why they come in sets 
My new bass came with fresh rounds and after one week i don't need the tone knob anymore. Now if I could learn to live with the fingers squeaks it'd be great to keep a P bass with rounds but it looks like I'm going to order flats. BTW here in Poland Chromes now cost as much as Labellas. 10-48 chromes for guitar have increased almost 50% since last year. It's insane

This seems like a non problem. Replace them all; if you play your bass a lot you should be able to naturally take the zing rather quickly.
After we wash our hands the minute soap residue is responsible for string death. I heard it and then found to be true. So don't wash your hands after using the bathroom. EEK!

I also hate old dull strings. Dark, lacking detail. Too mellow.
My favorite is the right in between after the strings have been played maybe a couple of practices.
Shame this goldilocks zone doesn't last very long. I feel like it only lasts for a handful of practices.
How long do you guys find it takes to reach this goldilocks zone? How long do you guys say it lasts for?

On a passive bass, the tone knob is your friend. Down for new strings. Gradually up as they age.
Um, have you thought about rolling off the treble an number or two until the strings settle in?
Just to clarify, I did put a new SET of strings on, but holy moly! That was too much! Figured I'd put the good strings back on So I could stand to play again.So I did the Eucerin cream on the new strings, few times now. Seems to work well, back to a dead sound but with bright, clean looking strings. I should look into flats, I guess, but have only ever played tapewounds on a fretless jazz. Not my cup of tea, that combo! Not really a fan of the jazz neck and I really need frets! But thanks to everyone that offered advice I have brand spanking new dead strings, couldn't be happier!
Honestly I think you should try flats, dealing with the fret wear of rounds only to basically try and make them sound dead like flats seems a little odd

Ok, update... I took everyone's advice and ordered a set of Fender flats. I am a convert! I'll never by rounds again! I may be in the minority here, but I think they make the tone knob actually usable. I'm on a budget, so it will be a while before I can try different sets to really dial it in, but did buy a set of short scale chromes to try. Don't know if I'll string them on my Gibson or Squier jag yet??? But good grief, Fender should put these on all their Precisions! Thanks to everyone that responded for the earlier help, and for broadening my horizons with the flats! This place is great!

I have a curse.
I break strings as follows:
String G - every 3 to 4 weeks.
String D - every 5 to 7 weeks.
String A - every three months.
String E - YES, INDEED - every four to five months.
Now, some comic relief.
I'm looking for cheap strings on Amazon and reading reviews about it.
Here is what one commentator said about changing bass strings.
(It's about Fender 7250 strings.)
"These strings were just what I needed for my bass guitar. I thought I'd replace the strings, even though the old ones were only 16 years old. (Bassist should change strings every 10 years whether they need changing or not.)"
