Regarding postal MO's, there is a caveat, as seller: you MUST cash the MO at a PO and not at a bank. The reason for this is that banks cannot (will not) validate the authenticity of a postal MO, so they will only cash it if you have a checking/savings/credit account with them--which means if it turns out the MO was a fake, they can and will hold you liable for the full amount! Plus they are required by law to report anyone passing a bad check, so at the end of the day you have to pay the bank back the value of the MO, plus fees, and later you get to spend a day in court to settle the bad-check case, and maybe even spend the night in jail.

The PO will validate the MO, and any cash you walk out with from them is free and clear of any issues or repercussions. Twice I have been at the PO when somebody tried to cash a counterfeit/forged MO. Both times the person trying to cash it was told they had a choice: leave the MO behind and just walk away, or stay and insist on trying to cash it--which meant an immediate call to the police, and charges pressed.

That means if the person had already mailed the item they were selling, they were effed. But if they hadn't mailed it, and they do the smart thing and just walk away from the bad MO, they do not lose anything but their time.
