A bit more info about the bass would be helpful. Do you know it’s history?
How old is it? Where from?

Beautiful old Steinway grands have been cosmetically ruined from being ignored in basements. If a bass sat in a damp basement for 20 years, sure it could be black mold. If it is mold, what then? Would you go as far as take the back off and wash the thing out with vinegar? Or live with it?

If this was my bass I would post pics, info and questions in the Facebook group ‘Double Bass Luthiers’.
Fully experienced luthiers and bass experts, like Arnold Schnitzer and Ken Smith, freely give opinions.
They will of seen this type of distressed wood many times.

As a remodeling contractor I would say it could be anything. Sometimes wood discolors black for other reasons depending on the species. If it smells musty, maybe. If it doesn’t bother you, just keep it dry and in a semi stable environment and it should be fine. If you are having trouble breathing around it, I would say the spores are active, but become dormant quickly once the moisture/heat sources are removed.
