I have created the ultimate P bass!

Truly a gorgeous build.

Also stoked you put in a series parallel switch. After I discovered it parallel P has become my default sound.

I put a push/push pot into my new Sandberg so it’s a stealth option.

I’ve also bought some 3PDT switches and tiny variable resistors for an experiment to try and “equalize” the output in series.

At any rate, can’t wait to see a rundown video about the build.

This is the G&L bass that never was. I have combined the G&L SB-1 split coil MFD pickup with the G&L L2000 preamp. The pickup was snagged on Mighty Mite, and I bought the preamp+harness from the G&L store a year or two ago. I replaced the pickup selector and series/parallel switch for a DPDT switch for series/parallel.

The body is Allparts Primo and required no modifications to fit both the battery and preamp. The neck is a warmoth J neck that I bought off a friend. Flamed roasted maple with a beautiful rosewood board and pearl blocks. Hipshot ultralites for tuners and Gotoh for the bridge. The neck needs a fret level and crown, I'll release a video once that is done.

Tonally, this thing is intense. Series and all the way open is FAT, and adding the preamp is like adding flour to a roux. It just gets thicker. Series and parallel are both unique voices, and the bass + treble cut and the preamp treble boost allow for tons of tone shaping.

I'm so in love with it and haven't even heard it.

I think you have the upper hand in this one, at least from my perspective. Lobster is a close runner-up.

If you really don’t know…a lot of people do that. The first famous bass player to put a J neck on a P body thst I’m aware of was Duck Dunn. You can see him playing his red 66 (i think) Precision body with the 70s Jazz neck in the Blues Brothers lounge scene.

Later, Fender built a Duck signature for a few years, and then Lakland built another signature red P with J neck very similar.

Did you already know that stuff? Anyway, J neck on a P body is pretty common.

I go the other way around. Precision neck and if possible 1.75 nut width on a J and of course a P. Looks great. The passive bass and treble on the G&L preamps are dope.

Not sure.

Not sure how it works but in Fender land there is the TBX. Many MIJ Jazz Specials had the TBX in conjunction with series wiring on the PJ and I think that was okay because of the darker series sound but I personally did not like it because it was harsh

Very nice though, the body color and hardware blend together super well. Usually I find gold hardware to look gaudy or tasteless, but it looks great there. Also digging the Double-P pickup configuration
