Ive tried so hard to like Fender basses (love their guitars!) But every time I pick one up I can't stand the feel or tone. On the other hand I love me some good old fender look alikes. Try a Lakland!

Yes, but the players preferences determines what he/she prefers in an instrument.
A bad instrument (or, car, if you follow my example) is simply bad, and can typically be determined as bad by any player. That's different than a player saying he/she prefers one quality instrument to the other.

But having said that has anyone ever found a Fender P or J that balances well on a strap - they always seem dreadfully neck heavy to me - perhaps a fault of the original design, but then again the basic design was conceived over 60s years ago. Many subsequent designs have improved on this.

As long as the Telecaster isn't your favourite guitar instead of the Stratocaster, you are not ready for a Fender bass.

It's as foolish to say fenders are bad as much as it is foolish to say they are the best. It's no secret you can find an objectively better constructed instrument (more resonant, better balanced, etc) at every price range, but if you want a fender, there's only one brand that offers them, called.... fender.
This whole thread really weirds me out. Best, not best?? Its all so subjective. However, no one can argue that they are the most Influencial and successful basses ever! Come on folks. Why, I mean why do so many pros play them? I mean guys who can play whatever they want. There is something so familiar and seductive about a Fender. I've owned so many instruments in my 43+ years as a player. They're all gone. The Fenders remain. Nuff said..

I've owned three over the years, a '73P a '78 Jazz and an Aerodyne PJ, they're all long gone with no regrets - Hopefully to someone that loves 'em.
