I hope Esperanza is not doing a Meshell!

I sure hope this isn’t the best track on her new album!

I’ve been generally disappointed in her new direction. I get the feeling she’s gotten bored with what she was doing (which is to say being a superb all genre bassist and very good jazz singer) and is presently flailing around looking for something new to do. I thought her new stuff and stage act was kinda cringeworthy. But it’s her bass and her career so who am I to say if a cross between Lenya Lovich and Yoko Ono is where she wants to go so long as I don’t have to listen to it.

So…

I fail to get the hate here. Based off everybody's description, I was expecting something off the wall. Honestly, this track does not seem wildly different than her previous release which everybody loved. I'm left a little miffed here.

How does not liking a song count as hate? I like a lot of Esperanza's material, but I don't like this. That isn't hate.

Ps I am much the same about Björk's last couple of albums and I have been a Björk fan since The Sugarcubes...

Ha, I've never found her more interesting. It's almost got a St. Vincent vibe but way better than the stuff St. Vincent's been putting out lately.

Another disappointment.

Let’s hope it’s just a case of sophomore slump for Esperanza Spaulding and Annie Clark. And Tal Wilkenfeld for that matter.

Can we stop with the juvenile characterization of any and all criticism and critique as “hate.” (What are they teaching in schools these days?)

Ms. Spaulding is perfectly free to go in any musical direction she wants to with no permission needed.

By the same token, anybody listening/watching is perfectly free to like or dislike what they’re seeing/hearing and comment as they will, with no permission needed. And to do so without someone coming along and dropping the kneejerk “hate” accusation (which implies they have no right to feel the way they do about something) when they do so.

Most artists try new things. Even if they don't quite always work out, they try. I wouldn't want to do the same exact thing over and over if I ever "made it" or had a choice. I would want to grow/change/evolve/try new things. That could be all this is.

I think she's very talented. Not really my thing. But you gotta give credit where credit's due.

I like it and lets face it, she’s a singer and she plays bass. But it's singer first.

are you serious with this? She's on her way to being the GOAT. Even Ron Carter said he can't figure out how she does what she does.

Yeah, being an original professional artist has to be tough. On one hand you have someone like AC/DC - they know the formula of what their audience expects, and they give it to them in spades. Others (like Esperanza?) want to branch out evolve more. I don't follow ES too closely, but Tal Wilkenfeld is going through something similar. If she wants to be a gun for hire bass player for major acts, she will have more work than she can ever handle. And she's damn good at that, she's proven it. Her work with Jeff Beck alone is more than most of us could ever hope to achieve. I feel like if I were in her shoes, I'd stick to being a top shelf bassist. But I'm not her. She's decided to try the indie singer/songwriter route, a genre to me that is absolutely saturated. How much this will catch on is anyone's guess. Most of it hasn't been my cup of tea, but I do like "Corner Painter"..

This may sound weird and superficial but, for me, a woman's eyes are what I am attracted to most. (Ok, maybe not the first thing I notice. A woman's smile is first.)

I always thought she was a little off kilter. As an outside observer not really attached to any of her work, I wouldn't say this video or song is coming completely out of left field.

As long as she comes out with interesting music, I don't mind what instruments are involved.
