I think MeShell cares more about creating some substantial and meanigful songs than impressing anyone with her bass chops. I like what she did later. Of course, as a bassplayer I also enjoyed the cool bass riffs of her JazzBass with EMG pickups.

The only juvenile attitude I see here is feeling the need to soapbox just because your carefully formulated opinion was dismissed out of hand. Typical “snowfake” attitude.

“Typical snowflake?” For the amount of time we’ve both been members here, and been reading each other’s posts, I thought you knew me, and I you, a little better than that. Guess I was mistaken. My bad.

For your benefit (since everybody here seems to get where I’m coming from but you) my comment was directed at the inappropriate and overuse of the word “hate” or “hate on” that crops up all too often these days whenever any criticism is leveled at anything. It’s childish because it’s a shaming move. It doesn’t address the criticism being made. It attacks the motives and character of the person saying they don’t care for something. Because “hate” (if you bother to look up the actual definition) is a pretty ugly word. And a pretty ugly accusation to lightly throw at people. If me taking issue with that when I see it is soapboxing, then so be it. Feel free to disregard it if so. I see no reason to change my position on that bit of misusage.

As far as somebody disagreeing with my opinions or dismissing them out of hand (who exactly did that btw?) feel free. I won’t be offended. I treat disagreement- if conducted in a well reasoned and moderately respectful manner - to be an opportunity for me to learn something rather than an excuse to feel insulted. Something I’m able to do because I don’t pretend to have all the answers or the final word on any topic. If I did, I’d already know all I needed to know, and not need to bother coming here.

I sure hope this isn’t the best track on her new album!

I finally listened to it a second time at a decent volume. I liked the song much more the second time. To be honest, the world is full of good music, and I enjoy Ms. Spaulding’s output thus far. If I lose I interest, there will be something else I like to take its place. For example, because I am studying bass with a teacher, I am learning Jazz from the Sixties and Fifties that Esperanza mastered 15 or 20 years ago. We all have our path. The only thing in life that should be our goal is to be truly comfortable in our own skin.

As an aside, according to the BP article she’s not playing bass on this album which to me is a huge disappointment.

Am not really familiar with any of her other music, first time I hear a track by her, but I found the music actually really good, the lyrics though and the way they are executed I find a bit strained, pretentious and affected wannabe deep.

Yeah, being an original professional artist has to be tough. On one hand you have someone like AC/DC - they know the formula of what their audience expects, and they give it to them in spades. Others (like Esperanza?) want to branch out evolve more. I don't follow ES too closely, but Tal Wilkenfeld is going through something similar. If she wants to be a gun for hire bass player for major acts, she will have more work than she can ever handle. And she's damn good at that, she's proven it. Her work with Jeff Beck alone is more than most of us could ever hope to achieve. I feel like if I were in her shoes, I'd stick to being a top shelf bassist. But I'm not her. She's decided to try the indie singer/songwriter route, a genre to me that is absolutely saturated. How much this will catch on is anyone's guess. Most of it hasn't been my cup of tea, but I do like "Corner Painter"..

The hard thing for me with Ms Wilkenfeld’s new thing is the contrast. We go from absolute world class “edge” bassist in the same ranks as Tony Levin and Lee Sklar over to…this kinda middling (IMO) “yet another singer-songwriter” with a guitar. To me it felt like going from Formula 1 to some backstreet drag race.

I guess the bottom line is that Tal Wilkenfeld is a tough act to follow. Even for Tal Wilkenfeld.

when people use the term "snowflake" I usually just stop reading right after. Unless they are talking about skiing, there is usually nothing but derision to follow

For the folks who don't dig this... cool. Maybe her musical ideas aren't for you. I myself have grown tired of the same old stuff and appreciate her stretching her (and some of our) boundaries.

Try playing it. There's bass there, it's obviously not the SOS either.
