I hope Esperanza is not doing a Meshell!

i pretty much never heard a Meshell song I didn't like.

I too like most so far with a slight dip where her current album is concerned.

I thought it was kind of cool, and not really that weird - including the video. I'd rather listen to that than a lot of stuff that's coming out these days.

I've not been a fan, but when I've seen / heard her, I like it, and really like that she is doing her thing - although it's not really my thing. Obviously a talented musician / artist / performer who is not "just a bass player." If from the start, she was just a composer and singer (and not playing a bass), I doubt there would ever be a thread about on here (obviously).

I think when an artist starts out, they have to fit into a box, otherwise they alienate people,,, but once they are established, they get to grow, experiment, evolve and actually make their art.

I applaud the reinvention of an artist's muse and direction. Ms. Spaulding seems not to be content with staying defined by the thing that made her famous. Very brave.

Miles Davis made a career by reinventing himself regularly. Often, his fans would criticize the work expecting more of what he "used to do", only to realize that he continues to live on edge artistically and eventually coming to love the newest adventures. From Bop to Cool to Fusion to Groove, many bands, many musicians, many directions.... all good.

I have to listen more before I decide whether I like the current work. I love the previous incarnation and am open to what else Esperanza has cooked up.

Ms. Spaulding is perfectly free to go in any musical direction she wants to with no permission needed.

By the same token, anybody listening/watching is perfectly free to like or dislike what they’re seeing/hearing and comment as they will, with no permission needed. And to do so without someone coming along and dropping the kneejerk “hate” accusation (which implies they have no right to feel the way they do about something) when they do so.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, including their opinion about your opinion.

The only juvenile attitude I see here is feeling the need to soapbox just because your carefully formulated opinion was dismissed out of hand. Typical “snowfake” attitude.

I guess if your whole life is I-IV-V butt rock it's hard to hear something new. You don't have to like everything, but it's a little sad when people won't even give something novel a chance if it doesn't sound like the same s**t they've been listening to since high school. ES is one of the most effective and talented cross-over artists in the last 6-7 years. Looking forward to hearing more.

What strikes me about this song and her more recent style is how much of a departure it is from her first 4 albums.
I like Emily's D+Evolution, but it's... darker than her earlier stuff. More disturbed, almost. Like possibly something traumatic happened after Radio Music Society, or she's working through past trauma that resurfaced post-RMS.
Dunno.
Like I said, I think it's good, and I'll keep listening, but honestly I'm a little worried about what she's gone through.

Note: I haven't listened to Exposure yet.

I think it’s the nature of highly creative people to follow their own impulses rather than playing to the audience who put them wherever they are.

Some are massively successful and their audience will listen to whatever they play. Miles. Rush. Sting.

Others, like MeShell, were always mostly obscure and probably figure they aren’t risking much. (Though I do agree her first two records were profoundly better than anything since)

We’ll see where Esperanza’s path leads. This song isn’t that much fun, IMO.

I don't hate it. The synth kind of obscures her vocals, but then they aren't all that strong in this song. It definitely doesn't come across as weird or quirky in any way, to me.

Maroon 5 has put out about 8 of the exact same albums, which is indeed boring.

Sting released an entire album of Celtic sea chanteys. Perhaps an unreasonable request of his fans to stretch that far.

Esperanza is very talented and skilled obviously, but I am not that into any of the music she has made, this latest included.

I was thinking about MeShell, Tal, and Esperanza. Interesting how each came up as a “player”, and now seem to have moved away from that.

I dig that tune, and support anything that will bring more eyes and ears to Ms. Spalding.
