We had an open mic tonight, the lead guitarist and I. He guitarist didn't show up, nor did he say why. I didn't bother messaging him, as he can go days without answering. Thankfully I have backing tracks for when I play alone. I did a song he didn't know, one I'd never played live. Maybe he has a good reason; maybe he's about to be fired. I'd had a thought from nowhere that he's about to leave, and I've learnt to listen to such thoughts.

Hosting = being paid to show up, something to be fired from.

Depends. If you're just casually talking about it, one thing. If you've worked something up and made plans to try it out in front of a crowd and the other guy doesn't show....no bueno. Almost as bad as not showing for rehearsal and "something better came up".

It wasn't a backup as such. I was going it alone with backing tracks before I met this man.

It was an OM we play at every week. I'm OK with going it alone, but it would be good to be told he won't be there.

Move on from wasters like this.
Music is notoriously highly populated by flakes and you need to leave them be..
In 5 years, you stand a chance of building a network of players who work well and you can call on, whereas these other guys will still be talking about it or back in the bedrooms.

Of course, if he updates you with a good excuse, you can put him on a shorter leash rather than cutting him off completely..but I wouldn't be holding my breath.

At a minimum, they're over-scheduled/their time is spread too thin for what they can handle reasonably, even if they might be uniquely gifted.

If they're like Angus William MacLise they might show up to the open mic place between a few days and a few weeks after the date.
