You need another opinion. Those are two drastically opposite diagnoses.

I like the smaller shops as well. I took my Pathfinder to the Firestone where I bought my tires from for an alignment and they said they couldn't do the job due to parts needing to be replaced and they quoted me $1400. I said no and took it to a small shop I normally go to for engine work and they verified the diagnosis and quoted me $500 parts and labor for the exact same work. Granted I had to get my alignment done somewhere else, but do you think I will ever set foot in that Firestone again?
I also laugh at the premise that dealerships only want your money but this guy is in it for what, the love of the game? To keep his mind active? Boredom?
