I like the smaller shops as well. I took my Pathfinder to the Firestone where I bought my tires from for an alignment and they said they couldn't do the job due to parts needing to be replaced and they quoted me $1400. I said no and took it to a small shop I normally go to for engine work and they verified the diagnosis and quoted me $500 parts and labor for the exact same work. Granted I had to get my alignment done somewhere else, but do you think I will ever set foot in that Firestone again?
I haven't been back to a dealership since they told me that I needed a new engine. That was 100k miles ago.
I also laugh at the premise that dealerships only want your money but this guy is in it for what, the love of the game? To keep his mind active? Boredom?
The thing with dealerships they would sell you their soul just to make some money, I don't trust them, they completely ripped of a girl friend of mine, she got charged $700 bucks for a minor repair and new tires (that she did not need)
Did the small shop use the same name brand parts that Firestone would have used? Most of your chain places and dealers are going to use OE or quality aftermarket parts, not the Chinese junk you can get at Vato-Zone. You can save a ton of cash by using junk parts, but the repair won't last long.
Of course. The other guy would do it for free really. But he'll take the money you give him.
