I know Rics are junk and all...

I looks beautiful. Really classy. But when I think Rick it's all about the quirky, uncompromising and somewhat flawed 4001/4003. I rarely play my 4003 these days but every time I do I instantly remember why I used to love it so much (and also why I went back to a P after all those years).

Even though the 4004 looks beautiful it just doesn't SCREAM Rick like a 4001/4003 to me. But then I'm the kinda guy that leaves the ashtrays on my P-basses...

Does the 4004 use machine screws for the strap buttons? Or do they save that particular "surprise" (when the bass hits the floor mid-gig) for the 4003 owners?

I had a Rick 4001 years ago. Loved it. Played great, sounded great, felt great. Never traveled with it though. I have heard that is where most problems are is the neck being so thin it cannot handle temp changes very well. I have nothing but great and fond memories of my Rick. I hope you do as well with yours. Best of luck

I despise the 4003, but those 4004s might just be the sexiest basses ever made. I want one so bad.
I got my first one about 12 years ago. Been collecting them slowly since then.
They are great basses, i think Rickenbacker’s best, but they still have room for improvements.
They also make a great platform for modding.

I OWN 2 4004S … I LOVE THEM BOTH.

For anyone buying a 4004 the first thing you need to do is rewire it. I find the stock wiring pretty much useless.

- they come from the factory with 2 15k ohm humbuckers and they are wired toggle, 1one volume, and one tone. The pots will either be 250k ohm or 330k ohm. Humbuckers need at least 500k ohm.

- option 1 - wire it volume, volume, tone with 500k ohm pots.
- option 2 - wire it with a toggle and stacked pots so each pickup gets its own volume and tone
- option 3 - wire it with a 4 band Audere preamp then you will have volume, balance, treble, bass, hi mid, and low mid controls
