Smokey Joe you are absolutely wrong and your attitude defines the meaning of trolling. This forum is a treasure of information and covers lots of aspects in the DB world. It's a privilege for a newcomer to have his/her questions answered by people who have spent a whole life playing or constructing double basses.
Watching the Forum's pages and becoming a member i have enriched my knowledge, i made friends and i consider myself lucky to be a member in this wonderful society.
Alas, this society is not particularly good for aggressive personalities who claim to know everything, are easily offended and see every differing opinion as a personal insult.
If you want to profit yourself from this forum please try to behave in a better manner and listen to people with thousands of DB playing hours in their pay-book.
Otherwise, most of us would be grateful if you could avoid posting your not so polite comments and keep them strictly for yourself.

PS It's a lovely Sunday morning in Greece and you almost managed to spoil it.Pitty...

don't have one worth mentioning. I am a beginner and unlike everyone else on here I am respectful of others that come to this site. So maybe I don't fit the profile everyone is looking for.

But you feel qualified to hand out advice to everybody and be rude to people like Paul who have huge experience and have played at the top level with the true greats of music and whose career we can all appreciate on recordings etc.

So why should a beginner be listening to you, rather than people who clearly know what they are talking about and can demonstrate their credentials..?

I am not annoyed or trying to be rude - this is a purely logical and dispassionate question and if people think about it, then there is only one answer.

If I want to learn about any subject, then it is better to consult people who know about that subject and can demonstrate that.

If you wanted financial advice or a medical consultation - would you take the word of an admitted beginner over somebody with qualifications and proven experience in the job?

A 3/4 bass is about 41and1/4 and a 4/4 is about 43 and 1/4. Only 2 inches in string length and the bass itself is about 2 inches longer. More common is the 3/4 because the notes are not as far apart. Thats what 99% of people want is the 3/4 size. A half size bass is not really half the size of a 4/4.

You can't put it that simple, and you are ignoring the difference between a D-neck and an eb-neck

just my two cents

Don't care that much for istanbul, never left anything there I care to go back after. You answer the questions and I'll just read the mail. I don't have anything but rational answers. I will give personal answers but they are not available to irrational people. My comments are not polite to people like you who are rude to me. Actually I have found very little info save the buy a $1500 bass. If that all the intel thats on here, theres very little to be gained. You see Matt was the latest to fall victim . He learned very quickly. Good boy!

I am NOT handing out any advice, I don't care what you all do. The only thing I recall is making a statement that my bass is 4/4 with a string length of 43.25 inches. I also said a 3/4 is 2inches shorter. Then you all attacked me like hornets from a hornets nest. Was that a reason to be rude to me? I know what my bass looks like, don't need to play in the philharmonic to know what size it is. If you are nice to me I will be also. I don't know what advice I gave anybody,v do you? I am a member also of the bluegrass forum. Those people are civilized and friendly.

i have a student with a CCB right now. the sound post is trying to push its way through the back, and eventually it will succeed. it's already developed a crack and is getting worse. he paid about 700 for it, and couldn't sell it for 200 now in its current condition. if he wanted to get it fixed it would cost several hundred more and then still not be worth the original 700 he paid for it if he wanted to sell it. spending the same amount of money up front that he has/has to put into his current bass would have bought him an instrument with a great set-up that is built to last essentially forever, and would be sellable for the price he paid for it. this kind of thing happens way too often. we didn't just all on a whim decide we don't like CCBs for no good reason. we see these things happen with our own students and others who post here about them.

btw, you aren't a member of any forum. you've been here for 2 days.

i'm a little puzzled about what you're trying to do here. you say you were playing bass in 1958, but you're acting like you were born in 1998. i mean this in all sincerity... i'm a nice guy and i'm sure you are too. thing is we wouldn't know it based on your posts. you haven't said a single thing on this forum since you got here that wasn't argumentative. you're kinda acting like an )). you know you are too, so why are you doing it?

In my opinion, "Jokey Schmoe" is not who he says he is. Rather, he is somebody like Trandon Buomiko, only here to cause trouble.

I will believe that this guy is for real when he posts pictures of himself holding his bass, preferably with today's WV newspaper.

I agree with you. Mine is 4/4 with string length of 43.25. My friend has a 3/4 and it is 2 inches shorter than mine. There is no standard, every time I see one its of a different shape. My hands are big so I got a 4/4 but I know everybody else wouldn't have nothing but a 3/4. C'est la vie

I for one said what I bought. I didn't ask for advice, but I know many do. My point is I'm not finding all the gloom and doom that is posted on here. I'm happy with my choice. Have had no problems so far after 6 months, but everybody has a hemmorage when I said my string length is 43.25. It is what it is, I have no problem with that but it seems everyone else does.

Most people that buy these cheap basses never intend to be serious about playing for money or at least that my take. If I buy a hammer for my wife to use in the house its a lot different than buying one to work on construction. I can hear construction workers now, that hammer is a piece of junk. Better not tell my wife that!lol!

When I bought my bass I asked what was the difference between 3/4 and 4/4. they told me 2 inches and proves to be the case between mine and the one my friend has. Thats good enough for me. The numbers are true to form on these two basses I don't know what varmit everyone of you all play. Yes I could set the bridge wherever I want but thats where the notches are at. I'm sure there are exceptions but that seems to be the norm for all I have seen. Why you don't think mine is a common size? I bet every bass on e-bay is nearly the same size. If you know so much about basses you know they are becoming more standardized than in times past.

I am NOT handing out any advice...

Well - there's certainly a lot of unvalidated opinions masquerading as advice, in the posts I quoted above...?

I think you need to appreciate that you can't just ramble on like this without getting "called out" - you admit you are a complete beginner, but are not prepared to defer to those who know what they are talking about....:hmm:

All of this is not helping those who are looking for advice and basically you are just making it harder for them.
