In my experience, it also depends on which pick you're using. Soft materials like nylon are more forgiving.

It's a Wedgie(sp) I think. Someone was singing its praises here on TB. It's rubber, kinda. I pretty much bought them-3 pack- on a whim. I have never used a pick and subsequently really suck at it.

Par for the course with colored coated strings of any brand. I use Dunlop nylon picks in a fairly thin 60mm style. They're pretty flexible so they don't tear up the coating too bad if at all.

Four years with GHS black tapewounds using the Wedgie 5.0 hard pick.
No flaking at all...still look great and sound better.
