OK, I’m possibly going to regret posting this, but...

A cover project I’m working with is covering this tune:


TBH, the intro count absolutely baffles me. Fortunately, the bass can kind of slide in there; but, I’ll be darned if I can pick the count out of the syncopation.

Which becomes a real issue if the drummer hasn’t accurately memorized that particular drum intro. Lots of chances for a train wreck if everyone is just saying “well, you’ve got to FEEL it, man.”

Any insight on how to think about the actual count that’s going down would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like the first guitar note is the "and" of beat 1, and it's a 2 bar intro.

As Pacman wrote, the guitar starts on 1 AND.
The drums start on 1 AND in Measure 2.
Here is what I would do.

The drummer gives four clicks - 1 2 3 4 and continues to count in Measure 1.
The guitar starts its intro on AND after 1 in Measure 1
The drummer starts on AND after 1 in Measure 2 and plays the 8th note fill that lasts And 2 And 3 And 4 And.

1 2 3 4.
1 AND - the guitar starts 2 3 4.
1 AND - the drummer starts its fill and continues till the and of the Measure 2 - 2 3 4.

P.S. And as the 8ths.
1 AND 2 AND 3 AND 4 AND.

Interesting intro to have such an apparent lack of downbeat. I can count what you wrote; but it just feels like everything is fighting itself. Anyhow, that’ll work.
