I love cheap basses!

Just got this off facebook marketplace for ……$139. Yamaha TRBX305 in new condition. Still had the knobs instructive plastic template, original strings, and plastic on the back cover still on it. Its ridiculous. Plays great, has a myriad of different sounds due to a 5 position EQ selector. 2 band active EQ, 24 frets. Crazy. Put some Sadowsky knobs on it ( I like to SEE where the knobs are set) Straplock buttons, and a set of Elixir nano’s. It sound fantastic. Just dumbfounded I got this deal.

Good find!!

I read on a similar post talking about liking cheap basses: A poster said:
Because they have 90% of the sound for 20% of the cost.
Well, its true, maybe a little better tuners, better finish, jury still out on pickups on expensive models. The sound may not be better, just different. If you have the opportunity to hand-pick an inexpensive bass like at GC, you really will have a deal.

Upgrading a bass?
1..Ok, upgrading a $300 (new) Squier to a MIM Fender p or jazz you can get used for $5-600 used.
2. Or upgrading a good $300 (new) Ray4 to $1200 musicman (used)
How do you go in this one?

Here's a third thought....GET A FENDER DIMENSION BASS! THE SQUIER ONES ARE COOL TOO! ....if you gotta stick to it I'd go with the musician myself...my main bass at the moment is a 93 mim jazz...I love playing that more than my 1500,American fender hot rod p bass

I was reading an old post that was throwing this idea around. I have a Fender p that I barely touch, while I play a ray4 at most of my gigs. I would like a music man. But I can’t justify spending the $$. Another issue is if doesnt take me long to get tired of a bass. I would hate to spend $1500 for a bass and get tired of it. Funny though I have played the ray4 at 80% of my gigs for 5 years.

getting tired of a bass? try using different strings - my experience is that various strings can really change the sound of a bass - sometimes more than changing pickups will.

i recently bought a set of thunderbird pickups and am still deciding on a bass to put them in. and i'm deciding which hum cancelling pickup i'm going to put in my new shell pink bronco. i'm thinking of a fralin or nordy 51 P bass style silent with alnico 3s.

1. i bought used MiM mustang pickups from reverb and put them in a $179 ibanez GSR100EX. sounds great, although since the ibanez was a single pickup bass and the mustang had PJ pickups, it took some routing. the MiM mustang pickups are among my favorites. or you could get a set of fender true vintage pickup/s for it.

2. you can buy used MM ray pickups and try 'em, see what you think. i would think it would get you most of the way there. it won't turn it into a music man, but it will make it sound like one.

Cool, like the bass. I see the Hartke HD410 & maybe the HD210 cabs. I only play small gigs now, I use a HD210 cab. Really like it. Loud with enough punch! We have a monthly smaller outdoor gig that it works really well on too.
The 210 is a HD, while the 410 is N HX.

Both sound very good through my Berg and Tech21 heads.

Ok, I admit it, I like a inexpensive basses. I currently play the latest version of a Sterling ray 4 I got on sale for $269. I got it as a beater, but I have played it at every gig for almost 2 years. Restrung, adjusted the pickup height, and never quit playing it. I have been looking at selling the ray4, & my fender p, and getting a Ray34 and but the ray4 is solid. Anyone else like me?

I had the same model Sterling , got a dean edge for 20$ (They go for 50-100 usually?) and thought it played way better than the 300$ Sterling!
