Sweet! Another good thing about cheap basses, you can learn how to mod, and if it doesn't work out, it's no big loss.
And yeah, I don't mind being the poster child for excess. I'll help my bass brethren and sistren any way I can!
I love my 2020 Ray 4! I did perform a couple of upgrades. Balanced tension strings, an SD 70's MM pup, and a Mojotone preamp. All in for about $550 including a cheap gigbag. It's my second favorite of all the basses that I've owned since the early 1980's.

I men mentioned it in the Headstock thread...I have a No-Name Korean made P/J hybrid-clone (P pickups in middle, J at the bridge) a goofy little headstock allowing only 3 tuners up, so 1's on the right. I paid $20 as it was a guy's starter bass. That was '92...only now am I getting a Thunderbird carcass to build up...good times..
I love the look of the retro looking pickguard...so prototype!
i've never had high end basses, but i just realized that i sold all my basses that initially cost me over $400 except for one, and it should have been under $400. i don't know how that happened, but i kept the ones i played, and honestly i'm pretty happy with my current crop.
I'm a big fan of inexpensive basses that can be modded, like my main 4 & 5-string. My main 4 is a Squier VM Jaguar SS (amazing neck) modded with DiMarzio pups & KickAss bridge. My main 5 is an Ibanez TMB35 (SS & neck almost as good as my Jag). Ibanez pups a little weak so the P pup is out for a rewind (I rarely, if ever, use the J). Bottom line is here are my favorite basses that are played everyday, modded & set up to my liking, for a total outlay of about $800.

I dont know much about Deans but I saw a neck through with 3 band eq and a decent flamed top, badass bridge and brass nut for $175 the other day. Took everything to not buy it.I paid $229 for this Dean Edge-1 five string. Put D'Addario light gauge chromes on it and played it for a year and a half and never once had to adjust the truss rod or bridge. It was the best sounding bass I ever played at my church.

I love my 34 AND 35 basses. I wouldn't get rid of them for the next step up. With that being said..... if you love that 4, why get rid of it!?!?!?! Save up for a 34. Don't sell what feels like home
Well I have close to 30 basses. If you took away basses that I payed $100 or less I would have about half of my collection. If you took away basses that I payed $250 or less, I would have 4 basses then.

I have a similar collection. The most striking thing on here is how peoples perceptions of "cheap" varies. To me £100 and under is cheap. To some £500 is cheap. I don't think a squier CV is a cheap bass nevermind a MIM Fender. On the other hand a lefty MTD 435 for £1000 would be cheap but it wouldn't be a cheap bass.
My point is that the difference in peoples perception of what "cheap" means is the most interesting thing about this thread.
It's great that we live in a time when a good playable bass can be had no matter the depth of our pockets. Good times indeed.
I definitely love the cheap basses!~ Just some of mine pictured above, none costing over 1K. I particularly scored with the "T-Series" Peaveys, most of them acquired 7-10 years ago for less than $350. An FSR Fender here, a Hayman 40/40 there and a favorite (the Jack Casady Epi) cost more, but I have many Squier Classic Vibes and VM basses that were $299.00 when new and less when found used. At my admittedly low talent level, they are all I need and MORE! It must be noted, however, that there are some on this list whose main bass cost more than my entire herd. How many do I actualy need? Just ONE more! (The TB Way).
I hate it when other people call my basses "cheap" but in the scheme of things I guess it's true. I've never had the desire to seek out or play a bass that costs thousands of dollars. The only two new basses I've ever bought were an SX SS Jazz and a Hofner Ignition club. But both were sold over time because I always come back to my Musicmasters.
I only have two basses, seems I've successfully beat GAS.
