I LOVE Jazz Basses!

"Look at our little, mutant babies!"
I mean, look at this! All my Jazzes are Freaks of Nature!!
And just to add insult to injury, all my P-basses have Jazz necks to boot! What ever shall I do?!
Seriously though, I'm just as comfortable playing a Jazz body as a Precision body. But esthetically speaking, Jazzes rule!

feelin' the J-love. My Supersonic is based on the Performer, Fenders mid-'80's attempt at an elite J. (the essence of a J none the less)
I bought a new Performer in 1985. Did some recording and gigging with it for a couple of years, great sounding bass. It was supposed to replace the Jazz. I have a Jazz bass, they are two different animals. I put a picture of mine on Wikipedia many years ago and it's still there.
It has a very long thin neck, from what I've read it was supposed to make it appealing to guitarist. It worked for me, it was the first bass I bought when I switched from guitar to bass.
I really love the jazz basses also. Dabbler I really like the looks of the natural SX 5 string. Do they still make those?
Hi guys, Dumb question, but being a rather small person, I have always liked jazz basses, but as more options became available over the years, have gone in other directions. Currently am playing a mexi deluxe jazz which is nice but am considering an upgrade, maybe an american deluxe jazz or an american zone deluxe jazz. My question, are the deluxe jazz basses smaller body wise than a standard jazz or p bass? Question is just physically smaller?

Speak for yourself! That technique is great when you want a really warm, fat sound.

The necks on those Performers look like a yard stick... I'd be afraid I'd snap it in two!

I jazz thread has to have at least one beat up jazz in it! I give you my '72
Sweet axe! - I've noticed the darker amber headstock face (darker than the maple board) on a number of vintage Fender's. I can only guess that the darker amber might be promoted by an additional layer of clear to protect the decals. (?) As in, I don't think they tinted the headstock face darker to begin with, but that time and sunlight pushed it darker because it was thicker there (?). Thoughts?

Love the Performer - especially in burgundy mist metallic! Only other colour I've liked it in was in a classic brownburst. Cool that yours is the Wiki pic! Oddly enough I've never played one - the neck looks like a 24 fret Ric neck (nearly the same width from nut to butt). I've heard they are a bit thin sounding. Someday I'll get an opportunity to play one. Gotta give Fender kudo's for attempting to do something new in 1985 before burying themselves in safe retro-rehash (concurrent).
I couldn't afford to pop for a used one (usually found on ebay selling upwards of $1k) so I made my own version. (and love it!)
got this yesterday, mij squier with an 84 body and an 85 neck, so sweet, i'm still shocked nobody else bought it

Having never played/heard one, how would you describe the double P tone? (primarily the solo'd bridge P) Does it sound different than if a J pu was there? (as is common) and how does a blend of the 2 P's sound? This pu combination was intro'd in the '80's for a brief time on P-basses by Fender when they were more open to experimentation and it's only recently been revisited. At the end of the day, is it a viable option or has the P/J prevailed because it just works better? (a hypothetical question open to personal tastes and opinion)
. All of your jazz basses have really skinny pups!! LOL. I've been an ibanez player for a while. I never found a Fender that I really liked, but the jazz basses look do sweet, I want to revisit them and see if I like them. I'm also getting the itch for a 5 string. Maybe a VM 5 is in my future.

That Supersonic sure looks like the work of Michael Stevens - who happened to be at Fender from '86-'90.
