I Must Be Getting Old

Oh man, I forgot about Meshuggah. They are THE only band I can listen to consistently without getting bored with all the scream stuff. They are technically really impressive. In fact, I really HATE music like this but they pull it off somehow, must be because I really appreciate the crazy timing and whatnot. It's like "math metal"

This band sounds good to me. Recording isn't the best, but whatever.
The singer is also a she.
Theres groove, melody, and all that. Melody is a bit sparse. ha
So yeah, yall are old. Or just don't like anything you aren't familiar with.

Absolutely not young TBer! You possess what I call taste, and it is a very good thing.
That's a pretty bad comparison, considering that Bach and Mozart were never alive at the same time. As for Beethoven, while he was born during Mozart's life, he didn't rise to prominence until after Mozart's death. So you're comparing a time period of 150 years or so to one of about 20.
But... but this video is from several years ago and they're using drums, amplifiers, instruments with strings on them, distortion and all the typical "old guy music" stuff.
This stuff wasn't more than scream therapy 25 years ago when it was cutting edge. Now it's just derivative (because, really, how far can you take noise in a new direction?)
As to the "You're too old" argument, that really hasn't held water since 1993 when we started seeing 30 somethings showing up for these sorts of shows.

I am surprised how wo many musicians judge a band on the base of such a horrendous record.
Indeed it's noise. The noise of saturated digital recorder and static, with feedbacking PA.
Why do people talk of atonal? They play in key and have structures, it makes a song.
As for the audience enjoying it, the singer has boobs, sings and acts like a guy. This alone is enough to warrant success amongst teenagers.

Also, did anyone here bother to watch all 17:55 of the vid? I want to know if one of them got hurt anywhere in there... it would be some sort of redemption as a comedy lol

So I'm visiting my kids in CA the week after Christmas, and as usual I ask them to bring their iPods so I can hear what they're listening to. My son, who's 19, hooks his up in the car. We get some White Stripes/Raconteurs (cool, I dig Jack White), and some Gorillaz (also cool... fun band). And then, up comes...
"CLASH CITY ROCKERS?!?!?"
Yeah, it turns out that my boy is totally into The Clash. He tells me that he's got their entire catalog ON VINYL except for "Give 'Em Enough Rope." So I share stories of Clash concerts I attended, we reach a tentative agreement that "Sandanista!" is their crowning achievement despite all the hype about "London Calling." And when I got home to RI, I went down to the basement, cracked open one of my many boxes of LPs, found "Give 'Em Enough Rope" and sent it to him.
This thread reminded me of this because there's been a lot of mention of punk rock here. Like many of you, I lived through that. And if you go back and listen to the early releases by The Clash, Sex Pistols, Black Flag et al, what really jumps out is the quality of the songwriting. The musicianship may not have been stellar, but man, these bands could write a song... like, a song you could SING to yourself when you weren't listening to the record.
The stuff in this video? Not so much.
Yeah, I'm fifty-something. But I don't think being a fan of songcraft makes me "old." I dig M Ward and Patrick Watson as much as I dig Dave Alvin and Neil Young, Beth Orton as much as Joni Mitchell. My favorite band right now is Y La Bamba. A great song is a great song, no matter what genre or when it was recorded... and there is a TON of great music being made now, equal to or better than anything from the "golden era."
This video, however, is NOT an example....

You're absolutely right: I'm not that fond of most of the early punk bands, but I still think The Buzzcocks had some really good songs - Pete Shelley could write a great tune. I think he'd have been a good songwriter whatever era he turned up in; it just happened that he was that age when punk was in vogue.

Great energy. They look like they gave the audience a hell of a show. Kudos to them. I'd rather watch a band play with everything they've got, than sit through another mediocre cover band or senior citizen blues band with no stage presence or energy.
It's pretty weak to take shots at a band you know nothing about, because you saw a live video of a loud aggressive band with $h!try audio.
They're giving their all to thier music and audience. And having fun doing it. Props to them. You don't like it or get it...don't listen. Talking trash out of boredom is poor character.
