I thought the same thing as soon as I saw this thread. My 1rst bass was a red one. I remember seeing Devo on SNL and one of the guys was playing the guitar version. Damn YouTube is amazing. Here's the clip.

It was also the bass used in one of my first Mel Bay bass instruction books.

Preface: May I just say that I have nothing but the utmost respect and love for everyone in the talkbass community and I in no way mean to offend or upset people. What I say here, I say with my tongue firmly in my cheek. Let's stay friends.
What you need is an expensive boutique bass, preferably something with a natural finish, though a slight stain is okay, and preferably with multiple strings.
Consider this:
1) Most of the posters on Talkbass are male and between the ages of 25-50. This is often referred to as the "Dad demographic". And Dad's are never cool. Unless they're letting you use the car and lending you $20.
2)Some of the most discussed bassists on the forum are Geddy Lee, Johnny Myung and Chris Squire, among others. Prog rock bassists, and prog rock is pile-drivingly geeky. Bassists that release solo records are also pile-drivingly uncool.
3)Boutique basses show that you care enough about your sound and you are willing to spend a large amount of money (that could otherwise be used for clothes, sushi, drugs, etc.) for superior playability and tone. There is nothing more uncool than caring about your sound. There is nothing more uncool than caring.
Any bass model that is 20 years old or more is vintage and therefore cool. So, danelectros, epiphones, gibsons, westwood, all cool.
The 80's are back! If you play a bass that was made/styled in the 80's, people will assume you are playing it ironically and are therefore cool. Case in point: the bassist for indie darlings Man Man played a headless steinberger bass. Man Man are cool. The same goes for cheesy metal basses like Deans and BC Riches. Unless of course you are in a metal band, in which case it gets a more complicated.
Fender guitars are iconic and largely immune to lameness, unless you get one of their models that doesn't have a pickguard and is stained instead of painted. Stained or natural finishes are always less cool than painted ones, because it says that your wood is expensive and nice enough to show off and not plywood, like cool basses are.
If you can't afford a Fodera or MTD or such, then get this:
