It's funny - there's a band here in the Northeast (based out of Jersey) called 'The Nerds'. They've been doing their thing for quite a long time - and doing it well (probably one of the most talented cover bands going, IMO). They have the image thing down pat, similar to what was described in the OP.

As you can see, the bassist plays (and has always played) a Spector. Doesn't take away from the image too much... ;)

Just rock out with what you want and/or what's comfortable to you. The rest of the "outfit" will take care of the image thing. Good luck!

Thanks. I think you're right, going too geeky would be overkill. I'm leaning heavily towards the new Danelectro bass. I'll probably bring my Jazz as well, and alternate. That's what feels "right" in my hands.

In the end, the music is more important than the image, after all.

The Dano might be a good choice - good sound/playability, with a bit of "quirkiness" thrown into the mix.

Good luck with the gig - sounds promising!

I just had a similar discussion with a guitarist friend of mine.

We were bemoaning style vs. substance, and similar things that come to you as you approach 40 and start waving your cane and yelling at kids to get out of your begonias.

He said that he was tired of guitars that looked like someone's dining room table. I went one step farther and admitted that I don't even care for COLOR anymore, give me a strat in olympic white, or a P-bass in black.

Then, after some thought, I added that there are situations, types of bands, where you have to go to the extreme other end of the spectrum and play the cracked mirror, fur lined, fireworks shooting guitar beast.

From what I've gathered about the Spazzmatics, people are there as much for the image as for the music. Actually, in one video I found, the music in question was a rather mediocre version of Girls Just Want to Have Fun with the bassist flonking some sort of distorted, scooped mid sound with no sense of the dynamics that the song required.

This gig isn't about music, it's about goofy fun. If it was only about the music, you could take off the helmet and the jockstrap and just wear something comfortable.

This is one case where I don't think you can "go too far"
