I Need A Geeky & Uncool Bass...

One question, will you guys be playing your instruments?, or syncing to a recording?

Seems like a really fun gig, what does the guy in the original act play?

I keep thinking the Steinberger look is the way to go, geeks I know always loved that "high-tech" look, get a copy one (like a Washburn Bantam, cheap, nice bass), strip it down and give it the paintjob from hell...maybe chrome bumper paint, or yellow. Add some Star Wars stickers.

I like the "I eat noobs" one

Here's the one:

The early-80's Peavey T40, clear finish.

...hey hey now....:eyebrow: T40s are not geeky...they are heavy :smug: Besides I thought natural wood basses were popular :p

And its funny, I'm no geek but theres been a few things mentioned here that I'm into that has been offered as geekdom O_O Transformers (well not the slop Michael bay shoved down our throats last year that is), and Duran Duran....:D

As for a suggestion on a geeky bass? How about a Brownsville bat? 24 fret, shaped like the bat symbol only compressed in a bit, satin black, rosewood fretboard, one pup (humbucker I think) and one knob..thats it...I have a pic of mine on the US Peavey club thread but I will try and post it here. My bat is up for sale too.

We'll be playing and singing, but there is a backing track with backup vocals and keyboard parts. There is a click that only the drummer will hear. We'll all be using in-ear monitors.

From what I've seen in the photos, the guy in the LA band plays a P-Bass with a checkered pickguard, most of the time. But I have also seen him with something headless.

-1.

I own that particular bass, and it wouldn't work for two reasons:

1) it's not geeky, it's badass. It's more '50s retro than '80s retro.

2) it has the most ballsy tone of any bass I've ever played. I don't think ballsy goes real well with geeky.

I also own a vintage Steinberger, which as many here have stated, would be the perfect bass because it's high-tech, and geeks love high tech. The main reason I don't play it out more often is because it is such a conspicuous, attention-getting bass, and it screams '80s.

Steinberger or cheap steinie clone FTW. I'd be tempted to get a Hohner or Washburn copy and put geeky stickers all over it.

Personally I'd either go for the Steinberger or similar headless but strictly white and black colours, or for the really geeky look, something extremely 'metal' (BC Rich, Dean etc) and them play it on a very short strap so the body's just below your chin.
