Thats true, actually none of the basses I listed are 34" scale. But I still recomend he check them out. Because he may change his mind about the scale length.

Although I can't agree or disagree with the statement, not having a Peavey TNT, Suasa raises a good point. The amp is equally as important as the bass.

Although the time frame is narrow for you, I would still encourage you to check out the used market. I managed to nab my MINT Fender MIA Jazz for $890. If I had $2000 to play with, I could have also gotten an Ampeg tube head plus cabinet. Of course, you need to watch the used papers over time but with a budget like that, buying used can get you a killer setup.

Edit: I just realized I didn't answer your question. Anyways, I would recommend a USED Fender MIA Precision or Jazz.
