I need and/or want more.

Well your certainly in the right spot to discuss your mental issue (GAS). I have it too.... real bad. There is one tactic I use that seems to help SOME. Put all your toys back in their cases and put em in a closet. Each day you can go shopping in your closet and close which ones you'll play that day. I do take out more than one at a time. I have "face-offs" between them to compare and complete them. Never keep them out longer than 3 days. Then ya gotta swap them out for something else. If you have 10 (or more) this works real well as you'll get that NBD feel each time you take one out. THAT DOES ASSUME you have nice stuff in the first place. IF NOT..... you need to buy more. SORRY..

I am very conflicted with wanting more basses that I don't need but want them simply to have them. For example, I'd say green is my favorite color. Someone recently told me I should get a green bass. There aren't a lot, and if they are around or above 1,000 dollars. It's a Hofner Violin Bass. It's an HH hollow body. I already have one like it, and based on demos they sound very similar. Therefore, I don't need it (and don't want the bass because I already have one just like it), but I feel like I should get it for the simple reason of having a green bass. Same thing with bigsby guitars. I like bigsbys, but I'm never ever going to use it, but I want it just so I can have one. There are several other examples similar. Is there any advice the community can offer to help me scale down/calm down and focus on what I really want for a bass and what I really want out of one?

If I were buying a new bass, this one would be it. The color is amazing.

My father preached to.me (at a very young age), "you need to understand the difference between wants and needs".

I own 3 Fender P-basses, bought over about 10-15 years. I started with a white one - on sale
Then I saw the candy apple red one, and had to have it.
Then I got a new band shirt, which perfectly matched the seaform green one, and I bought that.
Then I needed a 5 string, and saw a candy tangerine J bass, and bought that.

My only useful thought is not to buy any more shirts that I would have to match.
Then you bought a tan J bass to match your arms. A few months of COVID isolation indoors meant you needed a new shell pink P to match your arms. After going outside again, you fell asleep on the patio and almost died from a skin burn. A '70's walnut Tele was soon acquired to match your arms...

I guess after collecting some more thoughts, I have some more to share. I have noticed problems earlier in my life with buying things because I want them but I never have any use for them. I love basses and I want more, but I want to use them. I don't have intention of collecting to sell, I want to actually play and record with them. I don't want to spend money on something I'm never going to use, because I could spend that money on real life things, or making music.

You have it figured out perfectly.

You buy a bunch of cool gear and it sits unused...

I've generally found that if I can resist the initial urge to buy something, that the urge goes away after a bit. Maybe just practice a little bit more self-control and try to stop thinking about those things, esp. if you know it won't get used.

I've got probably ten basses here that were bought because I didn't practice enough self control. Over half have not been touched in a year.

Currently resisting the urge to get one of those Arctic white 60th anniversary J basses so I can totally sympathize

I love @LetItGrowTone's take on this. I think what you're being asked is whether you're interested in playing music on a bass guitar or in accumulating and playing as many toys as you can. If the former, you should be happy with one instrument -- green or otherwise -- that will allow you to express yourself musically. If the latter, you're probably more a collector than a player and you should probably concentrate on collecting as many instruments as your available space and budget allow.

I don't think it has to be an either/or situation. (Speaking as someone who both plays and collects.)
