I need another bass

I have a similar Pedulla bass. I wouldn't advise it as your main instrument. Although it's a pretty good instrument, considering it's one of his first, the weight is intense and well.....it's just an oddball. You feel hints of what was about to come, but Michael wasn't quite there yet. Then again the neck through design delivers a great tone with lots of harmonics and long sustain. What I like best about mine is the DiMarzio Model One at the bridge position. It sounds great for funky finger style. Almost Wal like. The electronics are freaky 70's style with all kinds of phase/parellel/series switches that can change the sound into something that resemble fondling paper. :-)

I had a '92 MVP4 for a while and I didn't really care for it. The neck was very thin and required a lot of attention to keep it set up correctly.
It could have been just this particular bass, but it certainly got tiresome. The Barts didn't really do it for me either. All in all, it quickly
became trade bait.

My choice would be the Ric, hands down.

Agreed. The beauty is that it is possible to make a choice without having to establish a basis of comparison.

To the OP: My vote is the Ric 4003. And then the Ric 4004. And then the Pedulla. And then get back to us. We will have more suggestions at that point.

I'm only a TB Member and I don't know crap. What I do know is that you should get both. Two different flavors of bass. A Ric is on my hit list. I'm so old I remember playing a Pedulla back in the Mid 70's before they got big. I wanted one then but still the cost was prohibitive as I was a young, and very broke college kid. As far as older established stuff goes I'm cracking up. It's 2017 and like I said I was playing on a Pedulla in the 70's. If your Co. is like 40 Years Old and you're not established then how long does it take? If you go to their website Pedulla says Since 1975.

What is the overwhelming consensus from the knowledgeable TB members?

The Talkbass answer is:

1) Flip a coin.
2) Buy which ever one wins that toss
3) Buy the other one next week. Or maybe tomorrow - you wouldn't want someone else to snatch it, would you?

My avice would be:

Next time you play a gig, see if you can figure out what's lacking in your sound at times. If there isn't anything lacking, then your answer is simple. If there is something lacking ,and one of the basses cold fill that void, then you have an answer. And a backup bass. If you're not gigging, then you definitely don't NEED another bass.

I probably have more basses than I NEED. But, as I play in church, I can justify them as "ministry tools". And I can afford them, so nobody has to eat Ramen noodles to fund my habit. Hence I don't NEED to justify my little herd. See how that works? ;-)
