I need bass buying advise

wow.. haven't seen a mis-matched wood finish quite like that. Kind of cool actually, very unique. I'd keep it.
personally speaking, punk rock isn't about having the right color or look but purely about the music as possible. I'd rock out on that bass unless the sole reason was to get a sound that the jazz doesn't have. If you add distortion and max the neck pickup while adding maybe 20% bridge pickup, you can get a pretty cool rock sound. If after a precision sound specifically then try a p or a pj bass. The Squier Vintage Modified PJ seems to be getting good reviews. For pure P bass, the Matt Freeman signature bass is a great option. P basses have different necks but if the sound so is what you want, you can always put on a the jazz neck.

Just a thought, Tommarx; if you want a P-bass sound, but are comfortable with a Jazz bass AND want something that can work for Punk, see if you can try out a Fender Blacktop Jazz.

Soloing the neck pickup gives a decent, if not spot-on, P-bass sound. But by adding in the bridge pickup, the sound gets all kinds of boomy/cannon-like aggressive. I can't rave about them enough. And the best part is, you get a whole lot of bass for the cost of a Mexican-made Jazz, maybe even less.

Good call. I suspect a lot of players have both and yes learn to play them both is a good suggestion. Having said that I have a pre-CBS Precision (neck type C) and prefer this thinner (back to front) Precision neck.

It's a week's work to get used to the P bass neck, but the benefits last forever. I just traded in my Squier VM Jazz on an American Special Pbass, Olympic white with rosewood fretboard, first gig was tonight. If I were to take my Squier to a gig, the band would mutiny. It sounds utterly dead in comparison.

I wouldn't worry that your "friends" are making negative comments about it. You got a good deal on it and saved some cash!
Try soloing each of the pickup and changing where you place your right hand with you play. Lots of different tones available. Don't worry about any hum; it cant' be heard when the full band is playing. Volume on amp may need to be increased.
Also, possibly reduce the bass a bit on your amp and boost the mids somewhat to cut through the mix better.
I'd try these things and more before letting go of your hard earned cash for something, IMO, that doesn't really affect the tone of your bass.
