I need help, P bass or Jazz, SX or Squier?

Jazz Bass all the way , IMO P basses are too tonally inept , one sound only , their necks are as wide as a railway sleeper . Much more tonal variety on a j although most times both my PU`s are on full anyway , nice playable fast narrow neck , easy scratchplate changes etc . I had a Classic Vibe jazz and I thought it lacked output although it sounded authentic , I cant comment on the VM with the Duncan designed pups but id buy one secondhand so youve still got money left for an upgrade if required , however my Korean mid 90`s Jazz wops the pants off any other J Bass ive tried period so you never know your luck , sometimes you just get a goodie . I would suggest getting an Aphex bass Xciter to beef up your sound tho .... well worth the money [ a Yamaha NE-1 would do the same job ] . Goog luck hunting .

thanks man i still checking my options i dont want to buy in a worry, my next bass will be my practice,studio,live, bed company, whatever for the next 2 years and im willing to put some money in mods in my next keeper hehe thnaks again :cool:

Just bought a VM jazz maple neck maple body, two weeks ago. I got it thinking I would need to mod it. But the duncan designed pup's are awesome so no mod needed there. The only two mods I did to mine were to change the pot knobs to "real" jazz knobs and I also put in a Leo Quan "Badass II bridge.

My bass can now hang with the MIA's and MIJ's.

Go with the VM Jazz you won't regret it.

You will not notice a difference in tone from the woods. SX uses alder and ash,and squier uses agathis in the vm p bass,soft maple in the VM jazz,and alder i believe in the P special. Although the VM p bass has a agathis body,mine is still very resonant,light weight,and loud.

Me too, minus the Badass II, (doesn't need it, IMO), plus a thumb rest and Straplocks. Great playing and sounding bass, plus it's real purty. :D

P+J all the way.

I just picked up a Squier P-Bass Special in the satin walnut finish with the jazz neck and bridge pickup on a P body with that all important P pickup in the mid/neck position. Best of both worlds. If you can't decide thats the one I'd get. Just roll off the bridge volume and you have pure P tone, bring up the bridge volume and you get a jazz sound with a little more thump.

The P-bass specials are awesome.

The new version of the VM P with the natural finish (as pictured above), according to the specs on the Squier website, has a soft maple body like theVM Jazz.

I'd go the P route, I have both but am a bit biased. I played a P for about 35 years before I got a J, then a MM SR5, a SUB4, a G&L L-2000 and L-2500. Plus a MM copy and a P copy as project basses.

I have never got on with the J twin volumes. For live I need one volume, the less there is to mess with the less chance there is to mess up.

I would vote p bass, My first fender bass was a mim jazz bass which I liked for a while but always wondered what my tone was lacking... then I found it the p bass grindy mids sound. Alone a p bass sounds kinda clanky and tinny but in a full band setting thats where the p bass comes alive. And you cant go wrong with the simple one volume and tone set up. I own 2 squier p basses (a 08 vm p bass and a squier2), and a mim jazz, I play the p basses way more then the jazz.
