I need some funk jazz suggestions

This might work for you too; its how I find new music lots of times. Go to Pandora (www.pandora.com) and start a station with those tracks/artists you mentioned. Pandora will do the rest. Then if you hear something you like off to Spotify to listen to a whole album.

{edit} Check out Medeski, Martin, & Wood all of it is good, but I especially enjoy End of the World Party

I'm looking for medium funk (that's the term used on the sheet music usually). Maybe some fusion elements as well. Here's what kind I'm looking for. My taste is too limited and I want to explore it further.

Remember, jazz funk, not full out funk.

Impress me :cool::smug:

Definitely check out "Stepping into tommorow", by Donald Byrd. In my opinion one the funkiest, sultriest, jazz albums ever. It's not on YouTube so you'll have to stream or purchase but it is worth it! The bass is laid down by the inimitable Chuck Rainey with Harvey Mason on drums and the very tasty David T. Walker on guitar. One of my favorite albums.

The old Billy Cobham stuff is aging well. Start with the "Stratus" album.

Spotify has a few good compilations also, with varying titles like "Jazz/Funk", "Jazz/Rock" and similar. They're all Cobham compilations and there is some overlap on song content.

Edit: here's a ~2002 recording of Stratus. It's Stefan Rademacher on bass:

And Red Baron, same group, Rademacher takes a good solo at about 2:20:

And, bonus round - also Red Baron, this time by Fina Dupa in Denver in about 2006. I take a slightly less good solo at 3:08:

Weather Report is not funk, and Heavy Weather is definitely not their funkiest offering. I'd take a listen to James Brown, or Parliament/Funkadelic.

I don't want funk. I want jazz. Medium funk. Songs like The Chicken, who are officially classified as medium funk. Big band stuff, not funk.
