I need some song ideas...

Men At Work: Overkill
Rolling Stones: Rip This Joint
Beatles: Savoy Truffle
Classics IV: Stormy, Spooky, etc
Pink Floyd: Us And Them
Roxy Music: Love Is The Drug
Viscounts: Harlem Nocturne
Wilson Pickett: Funky Broadway
King Curtis: Soul Twist(or anything else…Memphis Soul Stew, Ode To Billy Joe, Soul Serenade)
Coasters: Charlie Brown, Yakety Yak(both have King Curtis solos)
John Lennon: Whatever Gets You Through The Night
Dave Brubeck: Take Five
Stan Getz: Girl From Ipanema
Boots Randolph: Yakety Sax(Benny Hill theme)
Elvis: Return To Sender

Does your sax person play flute as well? That would open up a bunch of possibilities, and not just Jethro Tull.

To repeat the question posed earlier - What kind of gigs are you going after with these guys?
Just regular bar gigs or really anything that comes up, I guess. Here are some of the songs we're already doing:
Ticket to Ride
Love and Happiness
I Saw the Light
Something
Take Me to the River
American Girl
Come & Get Your Love
Jet Airliner
Ziggy Stardust
White Room
Stuck in the Middle with You
Born on the Bayou

Since you're doing Love and Happiness, I hope you're doing Al Green's version of Take Me To The River and funking it up a bit.

Personally, I'd be inclined to add more songs along those lines, "Let's Get it On" and "What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye; "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" by The Temptations; "Cisco Kid", "Low Rider" and "Spill The Wine" by War; "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell version; "September", Earth Wind and Fire; "I'll Be Around" by The Spinners, maybe even "Billy Jean" and (yep) "Play That Funky Music".

Aside from being a blast to play on bass, these songs are all experiencing a resurgence, they're recognizable and they'll fill a dance floor, which means exponentially higher bar ring and higher pay scale - In my market, $600 for a bar, up to $1,200 or higher value restaurant/bars, especially if you can present something with a reasonable lid on volume and a no-pause set.

Good suggestions. Thanks!

The way I approach this is to decide what the players bring.
I would actually have picked the genre first and then the players but anyway....

I listen to the singer and work from
there.
Too many bands try to work square pegs into round holes and it is easy to botch.

The last thing I would do is pick a list of random songs and hope they fit.

The direction of the band should be very apparent from the styles and chemistry of the players from the first get together.
