I need your suggestion for effect order...

I would go
Tuner -> comp -> octabass -> VMT -> aw3 -> chorus -> di
Because I like comp first, octave right at the front and dirt into filter. Modulation last unless you have reverb or delay
Try the board in every order--for fun.
There are suggestions galore online, but try what works for what you do.
It is more fun that way.
If you put the compressor first you will limiting the reaction for the envelopes and overdrives, but maybe this is what you´re looking for. So I´d go to:
Polytune- EBS Octabass- Boss AW3- Darkglass VMT- EBS Multicomp- MXR M83 Chorus Deluxe- TEch 21 Bass DI
This is was my choice. Why? I ever liked putting the octaver first to win in tracking. The envelopes or autowah (in your case) before the overdrives. For me it sounds better and fatter, but you can get some interesting tones putting first the drives and after the envelopes. Compressor after for tamming some spikes from octavers, envelops and overdrives, and before the chorus. The DI at the end chain for sending to PA your sound with all the effects.
It´s just me.
EBS recommends their comp before the octabass, but my Octabass tracks fine with no comp, so please yourself.
VtDI last, just because that's the only way you'll get tone in the PA half the time.

Yes, there is a rule of thumb.
There is also the rule of "whatever sounds best".
Generally, compressor can go first or last, or no stinkin' compressor.
Octave and synths like clean input so they go first.
Distortion into envelope sounds cool, so does distortion on top.
Delay and reverb last.

Downunderwonder may disagree but in the OPs case above you may want to place the DI last as it can be your source to FOH sound and/or backup if you have a DI in your amp (and it craps out).
The thing is that the effects order in the chain it´s subjective. We can give some tips about it. But no one like one self knows how wants to sound.

I've got a Density Hulk (Sub pedal) that sounds better (IMO) with the dirt going into it than the other way around. I put it there assuming that the Octabass would behave similarly, but like I said, can't say for sure without having the pedals being in front of me

Note the truism: there is no "right" way to do this, just what you like/want to hear. The thought behind my order is that octaver first, then dirt b/c filters often sound good with some dirt feeding. Also octaver->square wave (i.e. dirt)->filter is a common "synth" set up. Then chorus at the end for modulation, then the comp to keep things in line and buffer the signal again for the trip to the amp, DI last to get all other effects sent to the FOH. I could easily see reversing the comp and chorus too.

You know what, I take it back... just played with the sub before the dirt and it is sick.
