I Present the IdiotBox Effects's Blower Box

What are people's EQ with the Blower Box? Mine always seems a bit harsh on the highs, and I often have to trim them back to almost nothing. Thinking it might be amp EQ, but I like how everything else sounds. Suggestions? Oh, and I use flats, so I'm not even getting tons of treble from the strings.

Yeah. Highs are almost all the way off for me. Try going DI and you'll hear even more than what your cab does. I now use the Aguilar Agro for DI because of the presence control roll off above 4k. I started running my Blower into the Agro to do the same.

You have an active bass?
Yes I do. I've been futzing with the controls on it lately, actually, but not the EQ itself. Its got a blend between neck and bridge pickups, and I recently thought about getting a Music Man style bass, but decided against it when I can just blend a bit more bridge pickup in for that sound. I keep the onboard EQ flat, occasionally bump a slight bit more mids in, but that's it. It's a 3 band EQ system.

Ok, so it's not just my box or something. I've always loved the bass tones, but sometimes it's a bit harsh. I typically prefer lighter drive sounds, but I really like the "on the verge of doom" sound I can get with this pedal. (Well, I can go FULL doom if I want, but I keep the distortion knob about 10:30 to 11:00. Gives great break up with just a bit of hair on all notes, and more hair on higher notes with heavier playing while retaining all the bass.)

I have an active Schecter, and it makes most OD/Distortion pedals sound very sizzly and hot when pushed just past 12:00. It seems like the drive is either off or super crunchy. The Blower Box is no exception. The BB sounds great with my Stingray and the P-bass however. One of the few OD pedals that seems to play well with the Schecter is the Barbershop. I was just curious...

Playing around with DI recording tonight. I found myself pushing the treble on the Blower. I was cutting it at the tone knob on my bass (Spector Forte4 SS with the active on). I found the darker bass tone distorted differently, and benefitted from the treble boost at the pedal.

Bass at 2 o'clock, drive around 11, and treble almost (but not quite) off. A little treble goes a long way.

I added a few minutes to the treble dial after changing my p bass to flats (fenders), and I play with the passive volume and tone affecting my signal as little as possible.

Ok, thanks! I actually run a similar EQ on my pedal. I guess I wasn't clear enough, but I wanted amp EQ settings. Those are still helpful though! My amp EQ settings are here: (It's a GK 700RB-II)
Contour - Off
Presence - 10-12:00
Treble - 11 (Lately it's been at 1, but with the Blower Box, I reduced it. Also, I think it just sounds better lower now.)
Hi Mid - 3 (I've been tooling around with the mids a lot lately. This has been anywhere from 2-4:00. Trying to "cut".)
Low Mid - 2 (See above, this has been from 1-3:00.)
Bass - 12:00
5 String Button Off
Hi Cut and Woofer Cut Both On

Maybe I'll just lower the bass's volume and give it a shot. Hopefully it does just that and doesn't affect other pedals, settings, etc. and I can just raise the volume on my amp since I have plenty left. (Good luck, right?)

The sparkling higs its the general idea behind a rat pedal guys;)

A compressor in front can make it a darker distortion, try that.
True, but the clips are all so bassy! Actually, that's why I typically don't like RAT pedals, but this has so much versatility and doesn't really sound like a RAT to me.

Also, after the GK 800RB sim pedal, this thing is HUGE! Amazing tones. I usually run something into my Blower Box as well, so I can experiment with that stuff too.

Just added it to the board tonight. Didn't get to play around with it too long but it's definitely flexible. I have a subtle setting currently, kind of sounds like something I got out of my old Aguilar Agro. I wish it had more volume on the low distortion settings. Volume knob is maxed out and I can't quite meet unity gain.

Screw you guys. I haven't bought a pedal in over a year. And then I read (mostly) all 65 pages of this thread. However, I was pretty bummed to find the top jack/evil eyes version was replaced with the smaller side jack model. And I'm digging the current zombie/nuclear green version even less. So I sent Matt an email asking if he was ever going to run a batch of the older top jack boxes in the future. He replied within minutes saying he actually still had one(!) of the older cases laying around and if I was interested he'd put it together and send it to me. Payment immediately sent. So, like I said, screw you guys, this is all your fault. I don't even need a distortion pedal! :bassist:

It's like the old sales pitch goes: "It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it."
