I really hope those attending the Boston Marathon make it through this.

anyone from boston knows one of the inspirational marathon icons is TEAM HOYT (for those who don't know, a father-son duo, the son is disabled, his dad pushes the wheelchair). anyway they are one of the first things I thought about when I heard the news yesterday.

so the good news is, I read this morning they are OK, they were about 1 mile short of the finish line, the only bummer is due to the quick evacuation the wheelchair is missing. they had this to say which I think is really inspirational:

Dick Hoyt and his son, Rick, are ready to run the last mile of their 31st Boston Marathon.

As a tribute to those who lost their lives and as an example to those responsible for Monday’s bombing about the spirit and strength of America, the elder Hoyt says it would be an honor for them to finish the race one day.

“I think it will mean a lot to lot of people,” Dick Hoyt said by telephone Tuesday morning. "If they ask us, we are ready."

Wouldn't that be a great tribute to the victims, if everyone who didn't get to finish running the marathon got together and ran the last leg of the course?

what sickens me most is the attack was timed NOT when the elite runners were crossing the finish line and the whole world was watching (which would be horrible enough), but rather two hours later when ordinary people were finishing the race: moms, dads, students, neighbors, amateurs running their first boston marathon, etc. :(

Same here, which makes me believe it was more an act of flat-out mayhem than any kind of "cause".

boston.com is reporting the bombs were 6L pressure cookers (like for cooking beans) packed wth nails and ball bearings

is targeting people's LEGS at a running event some kind of sick irony? were the newtown families the target and if so what kind of crazy political statement is that??

I think I need to stop reading the news before I get too upset

one piece of good news, some of the photos show an older gentleman in an orange shirt knocked down 10 yards short of the finish line. somebody helped him up and he finished the race and is ok. he is 78 and it was his 3rd marathon! :)

lets keep it real...

The source stressed that Alharbi is a person of interest, not a suspect, and said he suffered serious injuries in the explosion...
The Pakistani Taliban, which has threatened attacks in the United States because of its support for the Pakistani government, denied any role in the marathon bombings Tuesday.....
"There is no suspect," said Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis said Monday amid reports of the person of interest. "There are people we're talking to."

guys, please...

One of the reasons people leave their home countries and come to America is because they want to live in a free society where people are "innocent until proven guity" instead of "guilty until proven innocent" (or "guilty because I say so"). Whether you jump to the conclusion he is innocent or guity based on a NY Post story, the fact is, there is a 20 year old young man horribly injured and suffering terribly. If his pain cheers you up and helps you get through these events, I don't blame you, but it makes me sad. :(

I know we're fighting a losing battle here, mushroo...

But the fact this guy is a "person of interest" could be for no other reason than that he is an Arab-looking dude who lives near the blast site; lord knows it wouldn't be the first time we were guilty of jumping to conclusions. Or it could be a host of other reasons....or it could be that they have some damning evidence against him. At this point we just don't know. But the cops searched his apartment, and I'm sure we'll know one way or another soon enough. I just don't want to be a part of one of the many online discussions that will turn this guy into a social pariah, whether he deserves it or not

The only thing you can do is exclude yourself from the discussion and let others talk about it if they choose.
People are going to talk, theyre going to speculate, theyre going to try to piece together every fact and opinion thats mentioned and theyre not ever going to get the answers theyre looking for.

if it spirals out of control, I'll back out...but for now I wanna be on the record as saying "Can't we all just get along?" :D

Washington Post:

U.S. law enforcement officials said Tuesday that a Saudi national injured in the Boston Marathon bombing is regarded as a witness, not a suspect... [a Saudi official] declined to identify the young man, but said he sustained serious burn injuries. The official said the victim is cooperating with U.S. investigators and granted permission for his Boston area apartment to be searched.

“He volunteered to have it searched,” the Saudi official said. “He is fully cooperating with authorities.”

Seriously? This thread has to go down the toilet like this? I know there are a lot of emotions running rampant and as some have said, people are going to speculate. However, please don't start name-calling and dragging this thread through the mud. I'm getting a lot of information from this thread and hearing a lot of hearts being spoken. I'd really hate to see a few bad posts get this shut down.
