I think i might have gotten missled on CL

I have been wanting to buy a MIM Fender Jazz Bass for awhile. I have been waiting patiently for a good deal to pop up, so I was looking at bass for sale on my local CL and found a MIM J for $250, so I sent an email offering them $200 with my phone number. I got a call telling me that he will accept my offer and I can pick it up. I check out the bass and it plays fine. He told me that he changed the pick guard and that the original is in the bag. I buy it and this morning i check out the the pick guard and it's a one piece white guard that goes of the knobs and some cheap white speed knobs to match. Did the older MIM J come with the full pick guard and white speed knobs?

You lost me there too. Pics would be a great help, include the headstock with the SN# and any other possible markings.

you know how the jazz bass have the pick guard and then the metal plate that goes over the volume and tone knobs? when i looked in the soft shell case the original pickguard was a one piece guard that coverd the spot where the metal guard goes over. i will post a picture of the original pick guard in moment.

Sounds like an old MIM Squier, they had Fender in big letters, and Squeir wrote small somewhere.

Nah, some Squiers were MIM, and had the big fender logo, there was a thread here on one recently.

it just didn't sit right with me this morning, all i could think of, is that someone probably swapped out a mim neck on a cheap squire body. anyway here is a picture of the old pick guard.

Yup, Mexican Squier, that should be the original neck.

i think someone swapped out the neck, because the neck just say's made in mexico and the serial number on the headstock is MN 509762

Changing words doesn't change the fact that you looked at the bass, played it, and obviously liked it enough to buy it. End of story. If you feel you were misled, you had every opportunity NOT to buy it. I assume the guy didn't force you buy the bass, right? All I can say is use this as a lesson. Trust your instincts...if something doesn't seem right, then walk away and do some more research before buying something that you're not 100 % sure about.

I actually think that they may be wrong on this one. If it was a Squier then even though it says Fender on the headstock you should see "Squier" in small print as well which you are not saying you see. Also the serial number you listed is for a standard MIM Fender made in 1995 and does not follow the Squier serial number pattern. Also Squier manufacturing was moved from Japan to Mexico for a brief time in the early 90's but by 95 they were no longer made there as far as I can recall.

Also I believe that some early MIM Fenders had the one piece pickguard like that. I think that what you have is a genuine mid-90's MIM Fender Standard Jazz. Either way if you like it then you got a good deal.

cool, thanks for the info, it just didn't sit right with me when i took out the pick guard to inspect it this morning. some of you guy's have been cool and helpful.
