I want a Fender!!!

Any of them can be at or under nine pounds, it varies from unit to unit. You just have to pick a model, and keep checking back with the local store until you find one you like. The RWs generally seem quite light, though, so that may be your best bet. The Sting signature model also is generally quite light, and it's MIJ, so not Mexican.

I have two precisions that are both under 8.5lbs (a '08 AmStd and a '08 CS '59). And don't rule out the MIM roadworns (maple boards). Killer instruments. The AmStd's, jazz and P, are available with maple boards.

Now, something to be aware of........ The last couple of MIA basses that have come through my local shop have had some very shoddy fretwork. Horribly uneven frets, making them virtually unplayable up high. The crowns were very uneven, and looked as if they had been dressed by a 3 year old with a die grinder. My '08 AmStd frets don't look like that at all, and it plays incredibly well up and down the neck. Make sure you inspect and play before you buy.

I've heard that MIM aren't as good quality as some of the recent Squiers. Have I been misinformed?

Yes you have. Modern squiers are awesome, but mims are great basses too. I own 3 an 01 mim p bass, an 03 mim j bass, and my recently aquired 97 fretless j bass. All of them are very solid instruments. and the 2 that have frets have very clean fretwork. I have ran into mims better then mia fenders. For some odd reason I cant find an mia that really impresses me. Maybe I like "cheap" basses. :bassist: The 97 j is the lightest of them all im not sure if its because it doesnt have frets or if its the poplar body since I think in 01 fender switched to alder bodies.

I picked up an old Odessa P bass (bet ya dont see many of them these days boys) black w/ white pick guard and maple on maple neck $40 ;)

but yeah the Aerodyne GEEZUZ wow its a modders bass but yeah i love mine its modded to the crapper so so lush its prob not ur thing with the rosewood board but look for MIJ they make some awesome SH1T and dont cozt anymore than a MIM

Well, the more recent squiers are amazing, so that's one reason, but there are different levels of MIM quality, so something from the Roadworn or Classic Series is gonna be nicer than a MIM standard
