I've heard that MIM aren't as good quality as some of the recent Squiers. Have I been misinformed?
I guess it depends on where you got your information.
I think the main argument in the many "CV vs MIM" debate threads is that the Squier CV line offers a comparable bass at a lower price, and is therefore looked at as a much better value.
Comparable bass. Lower price. Better value. Not necessarily a better bass, from a quality standpoint. Comparable.
TBH, I've A/B'd the CV 60's P and CV J against their MIM counterparts, and would be hard pressed to tell you the difference between a MIM and a CV if I played them blindfolded. Sure, there are differences, but most of them are small.
The CV 60's P costs $349. A new MIM Standard P is $579. That makes the CV $230 cheaper than the MIM. That's a chunk of change when talking about sub-$600 basses, and a number of people - myself included - don't always see the MIMs as being $230
better than the CVs.
Does that mean that the MIMs are lower quality? Not at all.
So, in regards to your original question, there's nothing wrong with looking at a MIM with a maple board to fill your needs.
