Thanks for the pics. As far as I can see, there's no purfling, so it's difficult to have an opinion on whether the shoulders have been modified. If it were me, I'd just have it appraised for insurance purposes and play it.

The sound is very good! Clear high pitch, lots of resonance, overall sounds super clear and good.

Not actual purfling, but a scratched line used by some makers who saved their effort for the upper strings that made more profit. Not a big deal in bass world. In the closeup shot, in the circled area, it does look to me like it runs off, indicating the shoulders were modified at some point in its life. You have what looks like a cool old bass. Play it and enjoy it!

i hate responses like this, but that bass does look very similar to my old bass that jeff bollbach deemed "1880s german"

Similar to one I had too that was described as "turn of the century German". I always assumed the label had been lost but there are enough of them out there sans label I wonder did they ever have them?

not a bad question actually.

I doubt there were very many basses without a label, just because labels in violins have been the tradition since d'salo in the 16th century.

my guess would be workshop bass labels were not thought of as important and little care would've been taken to preserve them? even some very fine instruments, who's labels we would have tried to keep, have been lost in the centuries.

just a guess. would love to hear from someone who knows more whether it's a likely possibility or not.
