I Was Pulled Over Tonight

I was on my way to work at about 5 A.M. a couple of weeks ago and had topped the mountain and was just coasting down it in a 50 mph zone. I saw the lights come on from the radar trap on the other side of the road and watched the cop pull a U turn. I immediately slowed and pulled over getting as far off on the shoulder as I could. I put the truck in park and turned off the engine and turned on the inside lights. I had the paperwork ready by the time the officer reached my vehicle. I smiled and said good morning to him as I handed him my licence and registration card. He said he clocked me at 73 mph. In my state , that is only 2 mph below what can get you a reckless driving violation. I said something about going down a long hill and that I didn't doubt him. He said I'll be back in a minute. He took the paperwork back to his cruiser and did what cops do I guess. He returned with a warning and told me to pay better attention on hills in the future. I thanked him and told him to have a nice day.
This isn't the first time I have been given a break. Heck , going back over 40 years , my driving record fills up three pages. I didn't build all those hot rods and choppers to drive them slow. In all those encounters with the law , I have never had a single problem with any of them no matter what the offence.
Smile , be pleasant , don't act like a jerk and you will probably get a break. At the very least you won't get clubbed , tayzed or shot.

For you it might be never. For me and for other unlucky individuals, it's almost never. And that's a big difference.

Like I said earlier, most cops do their job professionally and treat the public with respect. But if you happen to run into some good old boy with a sadistic streak and false belief in his own moral superiority, then anything can happen. I won't provide a complete list of abuses, but I can attest to being tailgated at 1am by a patrol car with his high beams on, for more than 10 miles, solely to harass me. This was after being pulled over for no reason and being lectured that I wasn't welcome in his town. I have no doubt that if I had so much as crossed the center line even once in those 10 miles that I would have been pulled over again. I was also once ticketed for reckless driving after making what the officer claimed was a dangerous lane change. This was a ridiculous charge. I

The last time I was pulled over a policewoman asked me that very question and I answered, "I figured it was to compliment me on my driving." She told me why, and let me go.

True story. Some friends have their 86 YO mom/mom in law living with them. She's doing great for her age and a while back on her way to go fishing she gets stopped for doing 45 in 30. Cop walks up and first thing out of her mouth before he can say anything, "Isn't there a doughnut somewhere with your name on it?"

She got her son (the local banker) involved and asked him to get in touch with his buddies at the cop shop and see if he can get it taken care of. The cop was so hacked about it he refused to back down.

Last Friday, after a really really tough week...I was chilling out and having a few rum and cokes.
Out of nowhere, this cop pulls me over and was severely uptight. He actually confiscated my ice bucket. What a douche.

Seriously? After a FEW rum and cokes you could have gotten a trip to the greybar hotel , a $10,000 dollar bond , another $10,000 bucks for lawyer fees ,a mandatory trip to A.A. and at least a six month suspension of your drivers permit. All you got was a confiscated ice bucket? Smile , be happy. You skated on that one dude.

your bs filter needs cleaning.

Try driving after having more than one drink in this country these days and see if there was any B.S. in my post. Legal limit in most states is .08. That is about 1 1/2 beers or one good stiff drink. I personally know a couple of people that have been through it. There was no exaggeration to any of my statements. In fact , I think I was a little low on the legal fees mentioned.

you misunderstood. The bs was the post you quoted and railed against previously. Hence the need to clean your filter.

I think what he meant about your filter needing cleaning was that the story you responded to was a joke. The guy didn't get pulled over and have his ice bucket confiscated. He was just being silly. Make sense now?

During a gas shortage a guitar player pal and I were heading out to the country to plant two or three hundred sprouts (the kind musicians grow). We went to get gas, but it was so crowded the lines extended to include a few cars still on the road. Since we were the new arrivals and last in line, I turned on the emergency blinker to prevent getting rear-ended. In the side view I saw a cop turn his lights on and park behind my pickup truck. He came up to the window and asked why I was parked in the road, and I told him there were so many people waiting to get gas that the line went into the road. He looked around and saw how busy it was. Then he looked in the back of my truck and asked me what all the little plants were. I told him they were sapphire peas and we were going to transplant them in my grandmother's garden after getting gas. He looked like he had never heard of sapphire peas, paused a bit, and left us waiting in the road to get gas. That was close.

Aka ''the greaseball defence''. Good luck!
Yeah, your right. But you're pretty much screwed anyway.
You can guess at what you did wrong, be wrong and get ticketed for that in addition.
Or you can plead ignorance, which implies you are not paying attention to your driving, which might be reckless.
Funny phrase reckless driving. It sounds like wreck less driving which should be a good thing?

You had just enough detail to pull it off. Had you just said pea sprouts, it might not have worked.

I'm sorry, are you inferring that refusing to answer the "do you know why" question will get you cited for reckless driving???

Saying you don't know why you were pulled over is not the same as refusing to answer the question.
Refusing to answer would either include a statement of refusal or just being silent.
The response in my case was a plea of ignorance, so not a refusal to answer the question.

Did you mean to ask if I was implying rather than inferring?
I imply in what I say. You (or the officer) infer from what you heard me say.
To answer the question that I inferred from your question, yes. I did imply that ignorance of how you are driving is a state of unawareness. Regardless of the cause of unawareness, be it alchohol, texting, or just that you drive the same way every day and your mind wanders out of boredom, you are not giving your full attention to your driving, which then may be inferred by others to be reckless. I was not requiring that you agree with me, if you inferred that requirement from something I said, that is beyond my control.

I get pulled over quite a bit after coming home from gigs.
Usually a tail light out. Keep my hands at 10 and 2 until he sees me.
Got pulled over for passing a trooper on the way to a gig last month.
Don't try doing that. I left my off with a warning.
