I assume there will be some settling/stretching with full tension strings.
You want the tailpiece hung so the afterlengths are one-seventh the length of vibrating string.
A Kay tail wire and tail piece will typically leave the afterlength at about nine inches. Most experts recommend a length of about a sixth of the scale (am I remembering that right?), which is seven inches or so. There's no virtue in maintaining a suboptimal design choice if you don't have to.
