I either read somewhere, or saw a video of one of the Motown musicians saying that they thought the music they were recording was pure junk, and when the songs were finished they would wad up the charts and throw them in the trash can. They had no idea that someday their work would be held in such high regard.
Same with the Wrecking Crew (most similarly with Jazz backgrounds). They derided a lot of the music they recorded for a living. One story has a couple of musicians laughingly saying "hey, can you imagine that some day a couple will listen to this and say 'honey, they're playing our song'".
