I watched the Grammy Awards, and "don't get it".

Same with the Wrecking Crew (most similarly with Jazz backgrounds). They derided a lot of the music they recorded for a living. One story has a couple of musicians laughingly saying "hey, can you imagine that some day a couple will listen to this and say 'honey, they're playing our song'".

I'm going to be in the minority here so here it goes.

Adele was awful live. Awful. Besides restarting because she was so obviously flat she restarted and she continued to be in the words of Randy Jackson: "a little pitchy dawg." Beyonce is a joke who is in the business because her father is/was a producer. (A question: How many of you in a live gig were able to restart because of any issue with your playing or your instrument? How many did Elvis restart? Sinatra?) Lady Gaga was bankrolled by her father, Joe Germanotta, and became a "pop star". There hardly any pop acts who had to work their way through the clubs and the grind and the sorrow like so many before.

Almost all of pop music is written and produced by three cats.

It's a TV program. with producers selling ads. Pop will rule the day. There are still grammys' awarded to jazz, blues, latin, and classical artists. You know, when the voice comes on (in a really fast and quiet tone) and says "in ceremonies held earlier today" and rapidly fires off some of the most brilliant players in the world. the ones we listen to! Instrumentalist and the like.. I do like some stuff that we all know. But I've told plenty of 'normal' friends that I love players/music that they've never heard of.. Not being condescending, just true.

And like @dragonfly66 said: "stop watching award shows on TV and imagine in your head that you are presenting awards to all of your favorite artists when you buy their music. Life would be so much more fun."

Dang.... so sorry if I offend anyone, but how do you guys watch an infomercial?

Don't people get enough of the industry patting itself on the back and ego maniacs tooting their own horns?

Once again, sorry if I offended or am offending anyone.

In contrast to the Grammy show, the other night I saw the Gershwin award given to Smokey Robinson. Every singer was brilliant. Every tune consisted of real music content. It seemed the goal was a higher art. Not the Grammy line up. Although the Grammy visuals and sets were outstanding and mildly entertaining, the material was all overly sugar coated, mega over produced fluff. Standing ovation from the audience. I would be (metaphorically) throwing tomatoes. Am I alone with this consistent negative reaction to this popular presentation?

There is absolutely nothing new about the music industry being a "it's who you know", nepotistic and corrupt to the outside viewer type thing. It's pretty much the same with every single aspect in society where the stakes are big dollars and/or ruling bodies. Hell, the kid that drops off your morning paper probably got the job through a second cousin. One still has to have the endurance and business accumen to sustain any type of longevity whatsoever in this business, so you can't discount that. If people are looking to the grammys as being a shining pillar of independently hard fought achievement through pure, anadulatered artistry expressed in its most funadamental forms through the given medium, they will be sorely disappointed. Sad fact of life, it's who you know. Always has been, always will. I respect the artists that start from the literal bottom, but maintaining those gains is no small task and it's not any big wonder why many of the artists that were/are considered "real" are often found dead in a bathroom, covered in vomit with a needle hanging out of their arm.

You don't "get it" because this isn't your generation's music. Heck, my parents didn't "get" Hall and Oats, Michael Jackson, Prince or Whitesnake (and don't even get them started on Run DMC). Guess what. The 80s wasn't their generation. Those acts seem pretty tame by today's standards.

I don't find it offensive that I don't get all of today's music. It would be an oddball 20 year old that would "get" Smoky Robinson or Crosby Stills and Nash. We're all mostly right where we need to be.

All of that being said, Adele, Gaga, Bruno and Beyonce bring a metric ton of talent to the table.....even if I don't "get" every single song they do.

I understand ya. ..but. ..there ARE a heck of a lotta young folk who DO 'GET' the old stuff. . (As well as the new stuff), listen to it regularly (as well as the new stuff) & love it as much as the modern stuff they like as well.
My daughter for one. ..Sure I brought her up listening to everything from Hank Williams to Led Zep. Billie Holiday to Beyonce. Joan Baez to TLC...
TLC was her fave when she was a 6y.o.
She ain't (by far) alone.

I stopped watching years ago - sooner or later you will, too. The Grammys have NOTHING to do with music. Who needs the aggravation?

No need to apologize for your opinion, just don't frustrate yourself and waste your time trying to understand why someone likes what you don't like, especially something as subjective as music.

The Grammy's are a lot more than a few big pop stars. I'm sorry you don't realize that. My wife was a nominee in 2015 (Best Opera Recording). While she did not win (her friends and colleagues did), the nomination was a much deserved and significant recognition for a life lived as a serious and productive artist.

You should try to see the whole picture, and perhaps widen your view. The mass media is not the whole story.

There are more - check out Billie Holliday & Edith Piaf for starters, & there are genres called Blues & Country & Western.

I get your point, tho & I agree Adele might put you in a blue mood after a few songs.
