I Won the Music Director Over!

I mention maybe a month ago that choir’s music director suggested that I played my fretted instead of fretless so as not to miss not. I stuck to my guns and got better. After hearing me use the Jaco tone and mwah on some slower songs, now she is suggesting where I should slide.

I am playing fretless more 90% of the time at church.

You are a man of your word! When you bought it you said you were going to predominantly play your fretless Pedulla until you were as proficient on it as your fretted basses.

I personally feel, that even though the Lord hasn't yet made known which type of bass he likes to have played in his general direction ; that if He were to make such information known, it would definitely be some sweet, fat, fretless mwah coming straight from the "Physician Of Fromage" himself: @Dr. Cheese...

I am glad things are working out for you and that you and the director are on the same page. I have never had a disagreement over which bass to use with any of the directors I have served with , but the choir likes the sound of my UBass , the drummer prefers My 4 string Ibanez, the guitarist likes my 5 string fretless. So, I often alternate them.
We will be getting a new music minister soon, and it will be interesting to see what will happen next.

I wrote that she suggests places where I might slide. She is not that knowledgeable about bass guitars, if I weren’t sliding already, she would not know I could do it. What exactly is the problem with the choir director making suggestions? She is our leader.

To me it sounds like she's really been listening and really likes the sound and wants to hear it more because she thinks it's cool. Someone is paying attention to the bass!

Ha! Well, this went weird quickly.... even by our standards.

Glad it's working out for you Doc! We need some more video of that Peddy in the band!

I have gotten close to getting another fretless recently. It didn't work out for me before because when I got it, I was playing so many shows I didn't have time to really woodshed on technique. Intonation wasn't a problem. But I just didn't play it like a fretless. The action was so high (for a fretless) that there was little or no "mwah" at all. In short, it didn't sound like a fretless when I played it.

You may have inspired me over the finish line. I need to try it again and play it like it was designed to be played. It just sounds so great in the right hands.
