I've also never understood how Americans can pronouce the word al-u-min-i-um as a-loo-mi-num.

I pronounce the word "aluminum" as "a-loo-mi-num" because it seems correct. I don't spell that word with an i after the n.
I'd like to get in on this, but unfortunatley "people in glass houses and all that". 
It takes a lot for me to become pedant, I make allowances if I like the content.

I just hate getting a new affects pedal, only to find out it doesn't effect my playing as much as I thought it would.

Maybe they did in isolated areas like Tustin or areas that get farther inland, but hella has always been a NorCal thing, IME. I'd never heard it until I got to college and made friends with people from NorCal (pretty much anywhere north of Santa Barbara). I've lived in OC for 39 years.
Yeah, that has been my experience, as well. I think Matty may have just had some weird friends from OC back in the day.
You want to know why? Its quite easy... because we spell it, "aluminum". A-loom-in-um.
